The Reservoir Tapes
The Reservoir Tapes | Jon McGregor
12 posts | 14 read | 3 to read
As broadcast on BBC radio 4: the fifteen 'prequel' stories to Reservoir 13. 'He leaves behind all other writers of his generation' Sarah Hall Midwinter in the early years of this century. A teenage girl on holiday has gone missing in the hills at the heart of England. The villagers are called up to join the search, fanning out across the moors as the police set up roadblocks and a crowd of news reporters descends on their usually quiet home. But the aftershocks of Becky Shaw's disappearance have origins long before then, and those in the village have losses, and secrets, and stories of their own... A woman remembers a son's inexperience - and a father's rage; a young wife pushes against the boundaries of her marriage, whilst an older one finds ways to ensure the survival of hers. A hunt for a birthday present takes an alarming turn, and a teenage game grows serious. Fresh hurts open old wounds, salvation comes from unexpected quarters and chance encounters release long-buried memories. First broadcast as a series of specially-commissioned stories on BBC Radio 4, The Reservoir Tapes returns to the territory of the Booker-longlisted Reservoir 13, revealing the web of connections that bind us, and the many layers on which we all build our truths.

A little companion read to Reservoir 13, one of my best reads of last year. This tells more snippets of the stories of the people living in the village from which Becky Shaw went missing; with her disappearance weaving through each story. Beautifully written.

Sweet, short, interesting read. Small village, missing teen, every chapter a different persons narrative. Don't expect all to be answered at the end, you have to make that bit up yourself.

I haven‘t read Reservoir 13 and only realised this was a companion piece to that novel after I started reading it. Some reviews say it is better to have read the original novel first but I think it worked as a stand alone. It had me hooked from the start. Every chapter is from the perspective of a different character but they are all linked in some way, as they all live in the same small village. Will definitely be reading Reservoir 13.

TrishB I‘ve read Reservoir 13- but not this! 5y
andrew61 I think you can still access the bbc series of this book on itunes or iplayer - definitely worth listening to. 5y

Those long summers, with no way out. Seeing the same faces day after day. You‘d feel trapped. Sometimes you‘d break things just to see what would happen 🌾☀️

This set of interviews/stories intersects with the events of the novel Reservoir 13. I enjoyed the various points of view and reading between the lines. It goes to show that while there may be one big story (a child's disappearance), everyone still has their own stories and secrets. Originally written and recorded for BBC Radio 4, which would have been cool!

andrew61 I think it's still downloadable on itunes as a podcast - well worth listening to if you can jenny. 6y

A beautiful little addition or companion read to the already brilliant Reservoir 13. Loved it.
