Reservoir Tapes | Jon McGregor
12 posts | 14 read | 3 to read
An American Booksellers Association Indie Next Pick Returning us to the extraordinary territory of Jon McGregor's Man Booker Prize long-listed novel Reservoir 13, The Reservoir Tapes take us deep into the heart of an English village that is trying to come to terms with what has happened on its watch. A teenage girl has gone missing. The whole community has been called upon to join the search. And now an interviewer arrives, intent on capturing the community's unstable stories about life in the weeks and months before Becky Shaw vanished. Each villager has a memory to share or a secret to conceal, a connection to Becky that they are trying to make or break. A young wife pushes against the boundaries of her marriage, and another seeks a means of surviving within hers. A group of teenagers dare one another to jump into a flooded quarry, the weakest swimmer still awaiting his turn. A laborer lies trapped under rocks and dry limestone dust as his fellow workers attempt a risky rescue. And meanwhile a fractured portrait of Becky emerges at the edges of our vision--a girl swimming, climbing, and smearing dirt onto a scared boy's face, images to be cherished and challenged as the search for her goes on.

A little companion read to Reservoir 13, one of my best reads of last year. This tells more snippets of the stories of the people living in the village from which Becky Shaw went missing; with her disappearance weaving through each story. Beautifully written.

Sweet, short, interesting read. Small village, missing teen, every chapter a different persons narrative. Don't expect all to be answered at the end, you have to make that bit up yourself.

I haven‘t read Reservoir 13 and only realised this was a companion piece to that novel after I started reading it. Some reviews say it is better to have read the original novel first but I think it worked as a stand alone. It had me hooked from the start. Every chapter is from the perspective of a different character but they are all linked in some way, as they all live in the same small village. Will definitely be reading Reservoir 13.

TrishB I‘ve read Reservoir 13- but not this! 5y
andrew61 I think you can still access the bbc series of this book on itunes or iplayer - definitely worth listening to. 5y

Those long summers, with no way out. Seeing the same faces day after day. You‘d feel trapped. Sometimes you‘d break things just to see what would happen 🌾☀️

This set of interviews/stories intersects with the events of the novel Reservoir 13. I enjoyed the various points of view and reading between the lines. It goes to show that while there may be one big story (a child's disappearance), everyone still has their own stories and secrets. Originally written and recorded for BBC Radio 4, which would have been cool!

andrew61 I think it's still downloadable on itunes as a podcast - well worth listening to if you can jenny. 6y

A beautiful little addition or companion read to the already brilliant Reservoir 13. Loved it.

4 ⭐️

This is an accompanying read to Reservoir 13 and is a collection of short stories from the viewpoint of various characters who appear in that book.

Like Reservoir 13 there is nothing specifically revealed instead each story adds snippets of information to what life in the village is like on a daily basis and some provide possible clues to what happened to Becky Shaw however these clues are often conflicting.

As a non drinker myself I am often amazed by how many people can‘t believe you don‘t drink.

Confession I will have a Babycham or a small Baileys hot chocolate at Christmas and New Year the rest of the time it doesn‘t bother me.
