Climbing the Mango Trees
Climbing the Mango Trees: A Memoir of a Childhood in India | Madhur Jaffrey
3 posts | 7 read | 5 to read
Whether acclaimed food writer Madhur Jaffrey was climbing the mango trees in her grandparents' orchard in Delhi or picnicking in the Himalayan foothills on meatballs stuffed with raisins and mint, tucked into freshly baked spiced pooris, today these childhood pleasures evoke for her the tastes and textures of growing up. This memoir is both an enormously appealing account of an unusual childhood and a testament to the power of food to prompt memory, vividly bringing to life a lost time and place. Included here are recipes for more than thirty delicious dishes that are recovered from Jaffrey’s childhood. From the Trade Paperback edition.

I‘m about a third of the way through this memoir and I am really enjoying the story‘s rhythm. It‘s a well written account that draws upon the power of food to recall and revisit some really unique childhood memories.

charl08 I love your cover. My copy is much more dated. 6y

I am fan of Mahdur Jaffrey as an actress, and an even bigger fan of her as a food writer; I have all her cookbooks, and have watched her cooking on TV; so I was delighted to read this memoir of her childhood, growing up in a large upper class Indian family in Delhi before WW2. You can really get a feeling for the place, the time and the atmosphere as she describes her growing love for food and cooking. Bonus is lots of excellent recipes.
