Steal the Stars, a debut novel by Nat Cassidy, is based on the debut science fiction podcast from Tor Labs. Dakota Dak Prentiss guards the biggest secret in the world. They call it Moss. Its your standard grey alien from innumerable abduction stories. It still sits at the controls of the spaceship it crash-landed eleven years ago. A secret military base was built around the crash site to study both Moss and the dangerous technology it brought to Earth. The day Matt Salem joins her security team, Daks whole world changes. Its love at first sightwhich is a problem, since they both signed ironclad contracts vowing not to fraternize with other military personnel. If they run, theyll be hunted for what they know. Dak and Matt have only way to be together: do the impossible. Steal Moss and sell the secret of its existence. And they cant afford a single mistake. At the Publisher's request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management Software (DRM) applied.

Oh hey! I liked a sci-fi book! 😱

Not only were (most of the) characters well-developed with strong, individual voices — but there was lots of commentary upon what happens when a person is starved for love & freedom. While it‘s true that the story rests heavily upon a severe case of insta-love, I think the fact of that was actually, thematically essential (it wasn‘t just happenstance or poorly-written). The full-cast audio performance was fun!

monalyisha In terms of audio production, I almost stopped listening at the beginning because it reminded me too much of a play (& I can sometimes be a theater-hating Philistine). But I‘m glad I stuck with it. It “grew” on me. I do wish that the dialog & sound effects had been more balanced; I had to constantly fiddle with the volume. Oftentimes voices were much too soft while gunshots, alarms, & screams were deafening. (edited) 4y
monalyisha Some people won‘t be happy with the ending. I wasn‘t *happy* with the ending (I‘m not a monster), but I think it worked in terms of the overall tone & message. 4y
monalyisha I picked this up because it was a finalist for a 2019 Audie Award (in the SFF category). I think it‘s got some sort of podcast connection but tbh, I know nothing about that. 🤷‍♀️ I catch the occasional podcast (usually episodes of the Duncan Trussell Family Hour) but I‘m not a frequent listener by any means. 4y

Panpan

I listened to the podcast version and loved it right up until the last episode. The voice actors were amazing, the plot was compelling, and then I got to the last episode. The ending made absolutely no sense. Everything they were trying to do they randomly undid and then the novel changed genre in the last 10 minutes for no apparent reason. I wondered what happened next, not in anticipation, but in confusion. I had no clue what was happening.

We had to move quickly. So I didn‘t dare kiss you. I might never have stopped.

But, oh, the smell of your skin. Lock the door from the outside and starve us to death. I could die happily in here.

Recently, I've been binge-listening to this addictive sci fi audio drama. Do yourself a favor and check it out if you haven't yet.

Since many of us here on Litsy enjoy podcasts, and most of us listen to audiobooks, I'm assuming there are a fair number who like serialized storytelling via podcast. What are your favorites?

TricksyTails I love podcasts! Hello From the Magic Tavern, Levar Burton Reads, Crimetown, Very Bad Words, most things by Wondery (Inside the Exorcist is waiting to be listened to but haven't got the courage yet🙈), Racist Sandwich, Smart Mouth, Losers Club, anything serial killer/true crime or food related and I'm in! 6y
2BR02B @TricksyTails neat! I need to check out Lavar Burton Reads. Do you listen to any docudramas, like Tanis or The Black Tapes? 6y
TricksyTails I haven't yet because I have a huge backlog but definitely love docudramas! What others do you recommend? 6y
2BR02B @TricksyTails those are the only ones I know of. I'm in the market for rec's myself. 6y
