Judgment Calls
Judgment Calls | Alafair Burke
5 posts | 7 read | 4 to read
A seemingly simple assault case spirals into a complex web of violence and deception in this bold debut thriller Deputy District Attorney Samantha Kincaid walks into her office in Portland's Drug and Vice Division one Monday morning to find three police officers waiting for her. A thirteen-year-old girl has been brutally attacked and left for dead on the city's outskirts. Given the lack of evidence, most lawyers would settle for an assault charge; Samantha, unnerved by the viciousness of the crime, decides to go for attempted murder. But as she prepares for the trial, she uncovers a dangerous trail leading to a high-profile death penalty case, a prostitution ring of underage girls, and a possible serial killer. And she finds her judgment—not only in matters of the law but in her personal life—called into question. In Samantha Kincaid, Alafair Burke has created a complex, appealing character—a woman consumed by a sense of justice, who is also tough enough to take on a man's world. Seamlessly juxtaposing courtroom scenes with those of criminal investigation, Judgment Calls reveals not only an insider's knowledge of the criminal justice system but a fresh new voice in the world of crime writing.

This was a little slow to start, but once it had me hooked, I really wanted to see how it was going to come together, and stayed up late finishing! I didn't realize that this was Burke's debut book - a pretty solid start. Looking forward to more of Samantha Kincaid's adventures in the second book. Also read 7 for #20BooksofSummer!

Apathy is grossly undervalued and never there for me when I need it. I was already sucked in.

Started listening to Judgment Calls by Alafair Burke today on my commute, which is my first book by her alone. Have read and enjoyed one book by her co-written with Mary Higgins Clark. This one sounds like a legal thriller.

Has anyone else read this?

EadieB @Andrew65 I actually need to read this one as I read #2 in the series called Missing Justice in 2010. Yes you have caught me again ROOing. I was a member of Barnes and Noble book club and the author was visiting online and I was asked to read the book in order to discuss it with her. I like her writing very much and have read The Ex by her too. 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB 😂I am shocked 😱😳, I know you will soon correct this grevious error. 🤭My library also has Missing Justice available as an audiobook if I enjoy this one. 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 Now that you caught me, I will be sure to correct it soon. I have the #3 in the series too (Cold Case). I have some Ellie Hatcher books by her too which is another series she wrote. 6y

Andrew65 @EadieB They have the second of these books as an audiobook too. Why do libraries miss out books in Series! Why have book 2 and not book 1! 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 You should tell them that they need to get the first book too because some people do not like to read out of order. lol 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB I think you have me reading in order these days, mainly! 6y
EadieB @Andrew Not a bad idea. You get all the background in the first book and makes a more enjoyable read for the next one. 6y

Went for a brisk walk in the woods this afternoon. Now huddled up with some hot cocoa and a legal thriller set in Portland. #litsypartyofone #pnwreads
