The Case of the Missing Men
The Case of the Missing Men | Kris Bertin
9 posts | 9 read | 7 to read
The Case of the Missing Men is the first part of an ongoing mystery thriller set in a strange and remote east-coast village called Hobtown. The story follows a gang of young teens who have made it their business to investigate each and every one of their town's bizarre occurrences as The Teen Detective Club (a registered afterschool program). Their small world of missing pets and shed-fires is turned upside down when real-life kid adventurer and globetrotter Sam Finch comes to town and enlists them in their first real case--the search for his missing father. In doing so, he and the teens stumble upon a terrifying world of rural secret societies, weird-but-true folk mythology, subterranean lairs, and an occultist who can turn men into dogs. The Case of The Missing Men is at turns funny, intriguing, eerie and endearing, and is beautifully illustrated in a style reminiscent of children's pulp classics like Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys.

Fun characters, great art, an exciting first half – and, unfortunately, an utterly confusing second one.

At first I felt iffy reading this, didn't immediately catch me, but then one of the characters sees something odd and then everything boarded the train to crazy town. This is such a weird mystery and I'm looking forward to the next one, The Cursed Hermit!

Reminiscent of Nancy Drew mysteries, if Nancy lived in a Cthulhu-esque, small, Nova Scotian town. Weird, beautiful, and fascinating. I found the unique way the author‘s told the narrative added to the unsettling atmosphere.

I can absolutely recommend this title. It‘s great for anyone who like Black Hole or similarly odd and disturbing titles. I‘m eagerly looking forward to the next volume.

The blurb calls this "Nancy Drew meets David Lynch," which is pretty on the money. A group of small-town Nova Scotia teens try to solve the mystery of five connected disappearances which seem to implicate their whole town. Really weird and wonderful, and great for Twin Peaks fans. (Unfortunately, its 1960s aesthetic, while not offensive, doesn't do the sole character of color any favors.) Still a pick for me overall. #graphicnovel

The description says it's Nancy Drew meets David Lynch. I think it was too David Lynch for my tastes. The art style wasn't my favorite either.

Every time I get #bookmail my husband gives me the side eye and and makes fun of me, but he's an enabler! I would never have gotten the book on the right if he hadn't told me about it and HE was the one who requested the deluxe edition of Paper Girls despite my telling him they were on Hoopla. 😂

PS I totally love him for telling me about Missing Men... It's rocking the Nancy Drew vibe.

LeahBergen The Missing Men book looks awesome! 6y
Sace @LeahBergen and it's a graphic novel...my favorite! 6y
Serotonin Papergirls started out great. Each subsequent volume is quite the trip 🤣 6y
Sace @Serotonin I've read the first two and liked them. My husband loves Vaughn, but doesn't want to read them on a tablet so he asked me to buy this. So I guess now I'll just read the book. 6y
