I think someone forgot that they borrowed this book from a library. Does this irritate anyone else?
PerksOfBeingABookworm I write in books (that I own) if they‘re assigned in class or if I‘m using them for my research. But I‘d never write in a library book. And certainly not to this extent. 5y

JanuarieTimewalker13 Not right, no consideration. The only way this is ok, is if it was owned by the scribbler and then donated to the library, but I doubt a library would put that on the shelf. I don‘t truly know. Good question for a librarian. 5y

Hestapleton I find academic books (kind of like this) to be more heavily marked up because college is expensive and libraries are free. As long as it‘s in pencil, it‘s usually not too bad. And I loved having other people‘s notes to help me out with tricky texts. (edited) 5y
PerksOfBeingABookworm @JanuarieTimewalker13 the book is within the university library system, so I don‘t think it was donated. But it‘s all in pencil, so..... maybe erase it all before you return the book? 5y
PerksOfBeingABookworm @Hestapleton I can deal with underlining text, sometimes that‘s helpful when trying to pick out the main arguments. But if you‘re just writing “I agree” or “so true” in the margins, that‘s when I get frustrated. Especially when the author is saying “hey, we should not jump to this conclusion” and the person writes “it‘s obviously this conclusion, though” 🙄 at that point, you aren‘t adding anything useful/helpful to the book. 5y
wanderinglynn I will write/highlight in textbooks or academic books *that I own*. I would never do this to a library book. 😠 it‘s rude. I‘d probably point it out to the library. 5y
JSW HUGE peeve, but only with a library book. I write in books I buy and plan to keep, or in a book share where we all agree to write in the book before it goes to the next person. If I think I‘m going to donate or resell it, I don‘t write in it. And I never write in someone else‘s book (unless book share as above). 5y
LibrarianJen In college I found the underlines and annotations helpful. I don‘t like it in public library books however. Our library‘s policy is to determine if it can be erased or if the book needs withdrawn. 5y
rjsthumbelina That's so irritating! I would definitely let the library know. I annotate my own books at times, but never a library book! Really selfish 5y

JanuarieTimewalker13 Well, I would have to advise the scribbler to take notes, it reinforces everything and would be beneficial to all involved. It is interesting to see others‘ notes but the interest doesn‘t outweigh the defacement. I am the book police, I suppose....hahahahaha...I would probably make a very nice notice and hang it in the library. “Defacement of books is not tolerated here. If you need pen and paper to take notes, they will happily be provided.” (edited) 5y
