A literary milestone: Patricia Grace's first novel in ten years. Uprooted from his privileged European life and sent to New Zealand to sort himself out, twenty-one-year-old Daniel pieces together the history of his Maori family. As his relatives revisit their past, Daniel learns of a remarkable love story between his Maori grandmother Oriwia and his Japanese grandfather Chappy. The more Daniel hears about his deceased grandfather, the more intriguing - and elusive - Chappy becomes. In this touching portrayal of family life, acclaimed writer Patricia Grace explores racial intolerance, cross-cultural conflicts and the universal desire to belong. Spanning several decades and several continents and set against the backdrop of a changing New Zealand, Chappy is a compelling story of enduring love.

An interesting story about a spoiled, unmotivated young man that leaves Sweden and goes to his ancestral home of New Zealand. His mother sends him on an assignment to learn about his grandfather, and she hopes, to find himself. Though there weren‘t that many characters, for some reason it was difficult to keep the family connections straight. The writing was fine, but the tone was flat, with no plateaus, valleys or a climax.

Pickpick

The premises of this book, isn‘t really the book, or only a really small portion of it. I thoroughly enjoyed this family story spanning around 50 years between New Zealand and Hawaii. Its beautifully written and teaches one a thing or two about these countries and their history from a native people‘s standpoint.

Are you a physical book purist or do you delve into the dark side and read ebooks? Until recently I couldn‘t stand to read on my Kindle. Now, I‘m beginning to quote enjoy it. For epics like Anna Karenina or even Gaskell‘s Wives and Daughters, it‘s refreshingly easy. #kindle #litsy #ebook #question

Kaye I‘m constantly on the fence with this one.Advantages of Kindle far outweigh the disadvantages. 1. You can carry your entire library in a tiny object. 2 If you‘re stuck someplace for a long wait, and you start a book you don‘t like, just click on another. 3. Fits easily into your purse. 4. Much easier for trips than carrying big clunky books. 5 built in light for night reading. 6 want a book, but it‘s 9 pm and you have your pjs on ? Click a button (edited) 6y
saguarosally Dark side. Physical books take up too much space, although I still have hundreds of them, perhaps thousands. 6y
Sophoclessweetheart I‘m a physical book purist lol. I don‘t even own anything that I can read ebooks on. I tried them a few years ago but they drain so much of the enjoyment for me. I really don‘t like them x 6y

rubyslippersreads I ❤️❤️❤️ and collect physical books, but my nerdy eyes prefer ebooks. 🤓 6y
wanderlustforwords @saguarosally This is one of the reasons I‘ve started reading some books electronically. Like you I have hundreds of books and many shelves but I still have books that won‘t fit. 6y
wanderlustforwords @Wanderingwithwords I feel ya Kendal! I‘ve just recently started reading electronically sometimes. I prefer a real book but I‘m am getting used to reading on the Kindle, but it‘s taken quite awhile. 6y
wanderlustforwords @rubyslippersreads Lol! I collect books too and still primarily read real books but I‘m growing quite accustomed to and enjoying the convenience of reading electronically! I love the dictionary feature! 6y
Sophoclessweetheart I completely understand. It‘s something I keep thinking about when it‘s dark at night and o can‘t turn the lamp on incase I disturb the baby 😅 6y
wanderlustforwords @Wanderingwithwords Hahahaha Kendal! My husband will sleep with the light but obviously is blissful when I‘m reading on the Kindle. 6y

How does anyone get the full cover of a book in the image?!

rockpools I think there are apps that fit things into a square for posting - but I usually turn screenshot what I want, then turn my phone sideways to landscape, screenshot again and post that one. 6y
