#CuriousCovers Day 27: #Car - I have never been to Cuba, but reading this lyrical picturebook transports me there, with its vintage cars, tropical climate, trees swaying in the breeze, and warm intimacy shared among family members. My review: https://wp.me/pDlzr-hZt

My #readharder2020 pick for a picture book with a human main character from a marginalized community (though I suppose you could argue that the car is the main character)

#AMonthOfSongs Day 15: I have never been to #Havana, but reading this lyrical picturebook transports me there, with its vintage cars, tropical climate, trees swaying in the breeze, and warm intimacy shared among family members. Different aspects of #Havana are portrayed here – from life in the country with all the horses and clothes drying in the breeze to a picture of the city with its bustling, active life. OriginalCyn620 The pictures are awesome! 4y

“The toad is bumpy, and our noisy car ends up so crowded with friendly neighbors who need a ride that i feel like we‘re traveling in a barrel of elbows and knees.”

My favorite page is the page where it‘s all colors of blue and it‘s supposed to be night time, it‘s a very calming page and the colors are very pretty.

The illustrations are very realistic yet cartoonish at the same time which i thought was interesting. The saturation throughout this book is very strong giving it a lot of bring colors which sets a mood of excitement, while on the pages when the mood is calm the saturation is low. It‘s a story about family through generations.

4⭐️ This is an interesting look at the classic cars in Havana. Our boy has to help papa fix the old car so they can see the new baby. The story hits on the poverty in Cuba and how inventive people have to be to keep old things running like new. I loved everything about this story, including the editors and illustrators notes at the end.

#ReadingResolutions Day 8: So I had to pop by the library before my evening class to see some of the picturebooks (around a hundred of them) that our library has purchased upon my request. Most are recent titles. A little but of #Orange in All The Way to Havana and my #orange cup of lemon ginger tea.

There is so much I love about this book. The rhythmic, onomatopoetic text, the colors in the illustrations, and a education about Cuban cars and the fact that they are vastly pre-1959 American-made cars, still running and piecemealed together and tinkered with regularly. However, this sounds mean, but the eyes of the people in the illustrations freak me in the same way that the eyes in The Polar Express movie do, so I‘m knocking off a star.

Gorgeously illustrated. A child‘s introduction into life, family, and community in Cuba.
