Still Can't Do My Daughter's Hair
Still Can't Do My Daughter's Hair | William Evans
Still Can't Do My Daughter's Hair is the latest book by author William Evans, founder of Black Nerd Problems. Evans is a long-standing voice in the performance poetry scene, who has performed at venues across the country and been featured on numerous final stages, including the National Poetry Slam and Individual World Poetry Slam. Evans's commanding, confident style shines through in these poems, which explore masculinity, fatherhood, and family, and what it means to make a home as a black man in contemporary America.

I almost always enjoy reading poetry and this book was no exception. “On Trespassing” was one I could really relate with. Will talks about inheriting his father‘s land one day even though he hasn‘t earned it. He hasn‘t lived with the land the way his father has. He chose to live a life in the city. Yet the land is a deep connection with his father and he will still want that in his life when his father is gone. Beautiful.

Nute I really enjoy reading poetry as well. Thanks for putting a new-to-me poet on my radar. Stacking! 4y

My wife is shaped like I married
a man, not a memorial. Not a headline.
Not another Facebook movement.
She is shaped like don‘t you dare. Don‘t you dare bleed out
in some car they don‘t think you deserve. Or
on some asphalt so hungry for your bones.
My wife is shaped like you make it home.
You make it home.

CarolynM That is powerful. But it makes me so sad that poems like that need to be written. 5y

My father grew up in Ohio and doesn‘t understand why the South is supposed to scare him.

⭐️4/5
A great collection of poetry by a significant member of the spoken word scene on life as a black man in America with commentary of the treatment of women as well. The poems are personal and touching even as someone who isn‘t a person of color.

TheNextBook This cover and title are everything! 😂 When I was growing up I hated when my dad did my hair. It always looked horrible. I relate way too much to that image! 6y
ElleSkel I can remember going camping with my dad and begging him to leave my hair in braids for the whole weekend. This cover/title says it all! 6y

My Button Poetry order arrived!! If you don‘t follow them on Facebook, you probably should. Clips of poets reading their work usually makes my day!

While the title makes you think this book revolves around Evans' daughter, it really focuses more on growing up & being black in America. Evans looks at what young black men deal w/ as well what fathers go through. You can feel his pain, his anger, & his sense of disenfranchisement.

Evans joins many other spoken word poets in publishing a book. I've been a fan of Button Poetry for a while now & am glad they are getting these out into the world.
