Personal Pleasures | Rose Macaulay
2 posts | 1 read | 1 to read
Rose Macaulay was one of the most popular satirical novelists of her day. In this lively, anecdotal collection, she turns her admittedly opinionated attention to life's random, and largely unrecorded, pleasures. From astronomy to new cars, church-going to the turtles in Hyde Park, she never fails to delight and amuse with her sure philosophical sense, sharp wit, and unerring eye for life's subtle ironies. "How true it is that every pleasure has also its reverse side, in brief, its pain. Therefore, I have added to most of my pleasures the little flavor of bitterness, the flaw in their perfections . . . which tang their sweetness and remind us of their mortality and our own, and that nothing in this world is perfect."

1. Mashed potatoes. I feel like I could eat my weight in them.
2. Haven‘t watched it in a long time, but Pretty Woman definitely qualifies.
3. Steamy historical bodice rippers
4. I don‘t feel guilty about indulging in good dark chocolate 😄
5. We all need to give ourselves a break and enjoy life without the guilt.

wanderinglynn Mmmm... mashed potatoes. 😋 Thanks for playing! 💜 5y
heikemarie I feel the same way about mashed potatoes. My husband usually looks on, horrified, as I transfer them to my plate next to the tiniest amount of protein possible. 5y
Lynnsoprano @heikemarie Glad to know I‘m not alone 😄 I make them rarely, since I‘m no longer a responsible adult when they‘re on the table. 5y

OwlReader Omg! It‘s my FAVORITE series but it‘s such a guilty pleasure. Dork Diaries has me addicted! Don‘t judge me 😂 5y
myellenbee I also love mashed potatoes especially the ones my mother-in-law made. If she were alive it would have been my mention. My mouth is watering thinking of them. I never could quite replicate them, probably just as well. Also love your header, retirement is very busy, seems there is less time to read. 5y
Lynnsoprano @myellenbee Hubby and I constantly ask each other how we ever had time to work 😄 5y

Pickpick

Macaulay has lately been the topic of articles. Which came first? Me, choosing the book from my to-be-read pile, or the spark of interest in the author by today's essayists? Either origin, it has been a happy journey with Macaulay this past two weeks.
