A 1,000-mile Walk on the Beach
A 1,000-mile Walk on the Beach: One Woman's Trek of the Perimeter of Lake Michigan | Loreen Niewenhuis
3 posts | 2 read | 5 to read
"[Niewenhuis] is a clear-eyed observer of the lake and its beautiful and sometimes ravaged shore. . . . a welcome addition to the literature of the Great Lakes." Jerry Dennis, author, The Living Great Lakes. In 2009, Loreen Niewenhuis walked completely around Lake Michigan. This book chronicles that journey, a 1,000-mile walk around the worlds fifth-largest lake. The book explores both the geology of the lake and the measure of a persona woman, married, mother of two sons (who joined her for portions of the walk). But most of the walk was done solo, an adventure in discovery of self and place. Niewenhuis conveys a sense of the magnitude of the lake she loves, a place so elemental to the states which form its shores. From a ground-level perspective, the book explores the natural and human history of Lake Michigan . . . and raises important questions about preserving our wild places and protecting fragile ecosystems on which we all depend. Niewenhuis has lived in Michigan for most of her life. Her previous writings have been published in literary journals, including the Antioch Review and Bellevue Literary Review. Her short-story collection, Scar Tissue, was a finalist in the 2009 Flannery OConnor Award for Short Fiction.

This was interesting. The author walked the complete shore of Lake Michigan. Her trip was done in segments and she walked along the water most of the time. I think the book could have used some maps. I found myself stopping to check where places were. This is my August #DoubleSpin book. I think this the 1st month I've read both books for #BookSpinBingo @TheAromaofBooks

JamieArc Ooh! I need to read this!! 3y
TheAromaofBooks Why do people write travel-based books without maps!??! 3y

I thought this looked like an interesting book. I love to walk on the beach but don‘t think I can go 1,000 miles.

I loved this book!!! Being a michigander, it was exciting reading about her walking through Michigan along the Lakeshore as I could visualize nearly all of the places she walked through and talked about! And I even learned some things that I hadn't known before. What a grand adventure! I'm so excited to get to go listen to the author speak on this book this evening😊📖📚♥️
