Stormy Petrel
Stormy Petrel | Mary Stewart

When Rose Fenemore takes a much-needed holiday to an isolated cottage on the Scottish island of Moila she doesn't expect much in the way of adventure - just a few quiet weeks of writing, walking and bird-watching. And then, late one night during a wild storm, two young men appear in her doorway, seeking shelter from the wind and rain. Neither man is quite who he claims, and the question of who to trust will put Rose in grave peril... ll at once I realised that the sky was full of movement, small shadowy shapes skimming low over the ground, swarming between the broch and the sea. The stormy petrels. The fragile, tiny black birds, nocturnal and solitary, that come ashore to nest but spend most of the lives flying close above the sea-waves, come storm or shine. Mary Stewart's beloved novel of romance, intrigue and the natural world, set on a beautiful isolated Hebridean island and featuring incredible descriptions of the beautiful, shy bird we call the stormy petrel, a metaphor for the heroine's inner turmoil...

I'm about halfway through and I just love Mary Stewart's books. They're such calm and comforting books with a little romance, a little mystery and great settings. I would happily hang out in this book.

Pickpick

I thoroughly enjoyed this book by Mary Stewart! I loved the setting of this book and the story was very cozy. As always with Mary Stewart, I wish there was just a bit more development in the romance. She really just teases her readers. Fun read! 4 out of 5 stars.

Mehso-so

This book was fine, but from Mary Stewart it wasn‘t her best. It starts off strong, but the plot fizzles a little in the middle. But again, it‘s a beautiful cover.

A vintage cozy set in Scotland sounds perfect to me right now.

shawnmooney I read one or two of hers as a geeky proto-gay preteen and enjoyed them. I wonder what I'd think of her stuff now? 7y
SusanInTiburon @shawnmooney I've always meant to read the Merlin trilogy. Did you read it? (edited) 7y
Mquatlanta Merlin series is TERRIFIC!! Read them all years and years ago, when I was reading everything I could get my hands on that told the Arthur stories. These were some of the very best. I still have the copies I read on my shelf some 30+ years later. 6y
SusanInTiburon @Mquatlanta OK now I MUST read that! 6y

I love the dedication.

(Wikipedia tells me it's a midge ... and that there's a typo here!)
