A History of Heavy Metal | Andrew O'Neill

'Absolutely hilarious' - Neil Gaiman 'One of the funniest musical commentators that you will ever read . . . loud and thoroughly engrossing' - Alan Moore 'As funny and preposterous as this mighty music deserve' - John Higgs The history of heavy metal brings brings us extraordinary stories of larger-than-life characters living to excess, from the household names of Ozzy Osbourne, Lemmy, Iron Maiden and Metallica, to the brutal notoriety of the underground Norwegian black metal scene and the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal. It is the story of a worldwide network of rabid fans escaping everyday mundanity through music, of cut-throat corporate arseholes ripping off those fans and the bands they worship to line their pockets. The expansive pantheon of heavy metal musicians includes junkies, Satanists and murderers, born-again Christians and teetotallers, stadium-touring billionaires and toilet-circuit journeymen. Award-winning comedian and life-long heavy metal obsessive Andrew O'Neill has performed his History of Heavy Metal comedy show to a huge range of audiences, from the teenage metalheads of Download festival to the broadsheet-reading theatre-goers of the Edinburgh Fringe. Now, in his first book, he takes us on his own very personal and hilarious journey through the history of the music, the subculture, and the characters who shaped this most misunderstood genre of music.

Fascinating history of a musical genre as easy to categorise as it is to nail jelly to a wall. If you‘re a Metal fan, you will laugh throughout this written, well researched, iteration of the author‘s comedy. For the uninitiated, it‘s a fascinating & funny history you read with an ever present sense that you‘re missing some jokes. Definitely accompany w. the Spotify playlist.

#FeaturesaMusician (actually dozens!) for #Booked2019 #Spring

My brain finds something so strange about Lennon and McCartney in the same temporal space as Jagger and Richards. They were, of course, but there‘s still something about it that givens me an oddly disconcerted pause!

Good book so far!!!!

CarolynM I know what you mean. 5y

I was wandering around the apartment trying to find a book for the #FeaturesaMusician prompt for #Booked2019 #Spring and failing until Mr GaD got all excited, rushed off and returned with this one. I actually gave it to him as Christmas present then totally forgot we had it. He was so excited that now, I‘m spending the weekend reading about Heavy Metal... this should be interesting!!! 😊😂😊😂 #catsofLitsy

This book is absolutely hilarious. Even if you only have a brief exposure to heavy metal it‘s well worth a read. It‘s even recommended by Neil Gaiman!

Feeling guilty about having not read this yet after speaking to Andrew this morning. Andrew is an incredibly funny comedian, and has put one of his latest stand ups into book form. I can imagine it will be a very funny read. He's on his way to Paris to promote the French translation for all those Littens based over there! I vow to read this before the year is out.

A great quick read for anyone sympathizing with the metal subculture and its folks! I really recommend listening to the audio, narrated by my favorite transvestite occult comedian Andrew O'Neill, the most lovely weirdo ever. @Johoney have you heard?

Johoney No, but it sounds delightful! On my stack 😘 6y
