The Art of Living
The Art of Living: Peace and Freedom in the Here and Now | Thich Nhat Hanh
In troubled times, there is an urgency to understand ourselves and our world. We have so many questions, and they tug at us night and day, consciously and unconsciously. In this important volume Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanhone of the most revered spiritual leaders in the world todayreveals an art of living in mindfulness that helps us answer lifes deepest questions and experience the happiness and freedom we desire. Thich Nhat Hanh presents, for the first time, seven transformative meditations that open up new perspectives on our lives, our relationships and our interconnectedness with the world around us. Based on the last full talks before his sudden hospitalization, and drawing on intimate examples from his own life, Thich Nhat Hanh shows us how these seven meditations can free us to live a happy, peaceful and active life, and face ageing and dying with curiosity and joy and without fear. Containing the essence of the Buddhas teachings and Thich Nhat Hanhs poignant, timeless, and clarifying prose, The Art of Living provides a spiritual dimension to our lives. This is not an effort to escape life or to dwell in a place of bliss outside of this world. Instead, this path will allow us to discover where we come from and where we are going. And most of all, it will generate happiness, understanding, and love, so we can live deeply in each moment of our life, right where we are.

There were a bunch of good takeaways in this....

Much of it is a relaxing read, while giving instructions for a certain way of life (ideas I'm not sure I want to follow), I guess containing many answers.

I'd never read Buddhist stuff before so I'm hoping this was a good introduction.

I admire it, even though I doubt I'll walk that path. It's interesting though, and I love some of the grand concepts.

Throughout our life we produce energy. We say things and do things, and every thought, every word, and every act carries our signature. What we produce as thoughts, as speech, as action, continues to influence the world, and that is our continuation body. Our actions carry us into the future. We are like stars whose light energy continues to radiate across the cosmos millions of years after they become extinct.

Whether this moment is happy or not depends on you. It`s you who makes the moment happy, not the moment that makes you happy. With mindfulness, concentration, and insight, any moment can become a happy moment.

Breathing in, I see all my ancestors in me: my mineral ancestors, plant ancestors, mammal ancestors, and human ancestors. My ancestors are always present, alive in every cell of my body, and I play a part in their immortality.

I don‘t assign star ratings to religious texts, but THE ART OF LIVING would rank high if I did. It‘s valuable, affecting, and applicable to people at all stages of their spiritual journey. Thich Nhat Hanh writes from a Buddhist perspective without assuming the reader‘s Buddhism, and I‘m sure people of all faiths will find much to consider in here.

He‘s also inspired me to dig deeper. I hereby commit to reading at least 12 Buddhist texts in 2020.

alisiakae Great goal! 4y
xicanti @4thhouseontheleft I‘m excited. I‘ve already started adding books to my library list, 4y
alisiakae I have been thinking about what to read for the #LiveandLearn #Booked2020 prompt, and the #pop20 book on something you know nothing about, and it‘s turning into a whole study plan for next year that will be way more than 2 books. 😂 4y

It felt appropriate to just sit and BE while I started THE ART OF LIVING, so that‘s what I did. I‘m gonna get a lot out of this book.

TNH is currently transitioning to another state of being/nonbeing. My beloved old dog is slowing down and suffering from arthritis attacks. This book presents the teachings of TNH just before his stroke a few years ago. “In the words of the first Zen teacher in Vietnam and China, Master Tang House, ‘Letting go is the action of heroes.‘”

This was, of course, wonderful. I‘ve loved anything I‘ve ever read by Thich Nhat Hanh - he is SO good at distilling mindfulness principles into simple thoughts and practical tips. I should probably buy a copy because this would be well worth an annual (if not more frequent) reread. ❤️

Having borrowed this edition from the library means that I‘ve had to renew it a few times and copy resonant passages in a 📓😊Beautiful food-for-thought. #booksandcoffee

BellaBookNook I had a chance to hear him speak many years ago. It was amazing experience. He is quite a prolific writer. I hope he heals and is able to return to sharing his wisdom. 6y
Lesliereads @BellaBookNook What memorable experience you had - I‘ll avoid being envious and be happy for you, instead😊. I, too, hope that his health is much better.🙏🏾💞 6y

4/5
I never used to listen to audiobooks, but after listening to all my podcasts (and then some) I borrowed this little number from the library. Just what I needed to get me through my 1.5hr commute.. Incorporating a little “mindfulness” into my driving made the drive enjoyable and productive. 🙏🏼
