The End of the Third Age
The End of the Third Age: The History of the Lord of the Rings, Part Four | John Ronald Reuel Tolkien, Christopher Tolkien
3 posts | 2 read
The End of the Third Age is comprised of the first section of the hardcover volume published as Sauron Defeated, the ninth volume of The History of Middle-earth. It completes Christopher Tolkien's account of the creation of The Lord of the Rings begun in the earlier volumes, The Return of the Shadow, The Treason of Isengard, and The War of the Ring. The End of the Third Age begins with Sam's rescue of Frodo from the Tower of Kirith Ungol, and giving a very different account of the Scouring of the Shire, this part ends with versions of the hitherto unpublished Epilogue, in which, years after the departure of Bilbo and Frodo from the Grey Havens, Sam attempts to answer his children's questions. The book is illustrated with changing conceptions of Kirith Ungol and Mount Doom, as well as previously unpublished drawings of Orthanc and Dunharrow.

The End of the Third Age...and the end of #LOTRHistory I‘m sorry to see it end, but very curious to see what‘s next as I switch over to Sauron Defeated to see what Christopher Tolkien has in store next.

JazzFeathers I've heard people talking about The Notion Book Club paper often on my Tolkien FB group, and still l have no idea what they are about. I am sooooo curious. Work is relentless, gals. But l'm slowly catching up 😊 @Daisey @Riveted_Reader_Melissa @eanderson @wordslinger42 @tdrosebud @BookwormAHN How's everyone else doing? 5y
BookwormAHN @JazzFeathers I used the readathon to catch up 😸 5y
wordslinger42 @JazzFeathers I'm still (miraculously) on schedule! I think this is the longest I've managed to stay on track and not fall behind 😅 Let's see how long I can keep it up! 5y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @wordslinger42 Whoo Hoo! Go you! I go through cycles too, but I am also currently on track @JazzFeathers 5y

No worries ladies, I found the answer! Looks like what is in the end of The End of The Third Age is also in the beginning of Sauron Defeated...just separated out when it was republished as The History of LOTR and sold separately.

I can‘t believe we are into Part Three today!

Does anyone else have The End of the Third Age that came with my set to read too, or is that just an odd inclusion in my set?

Riveted_Reader_Melissa @BookwormAHN Yea! I‘m not alone ...and hey I can‘t believe I forgot to tag everybody, so yay you found me in the Litsy feeds! 5y

wordslinger42 @Riveted_Reader_Melissa Is it a separate book included in the boxed set? I've been getting the books separately or from the library, but I don't remember seeing that title when I looked at the boxed set at my bookstore! I'm so excited to be starting part three today, too! 😄 5y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @wordslinger42 Yes, it‘s a separate little book in the boxed set, about 140 pages. 5y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @wordslinger42 and @BookwormAHN I figured it out, once I pulled both of them out today. I posted the editors note too and tagged you both. Looks like what is in The End of the Third Age is the beginning material of Sauron Defeated....just partially sectioned off and reprinted separately when they began selling The History of Lord of the Rings separately from The Histories of Middle Earth. So we should be able to go straight to Sauron Defeated. (edited) 5y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa So everything in The End of The Third Age, is just a reprint of Part One in Sauron Defeated 5y
wordslinger42 @Riveted_Reader_Melissa Good to know! :) Thanks for solving the mystery! Are we starting Sauron Defeated right after we finish this book? If so, I'm going to place my hold soon! My library can be slow about holds sometimes! 5y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @wordslinger42 Good question! There was talk of re-reading LOTR after its history, and over the holiday season. I don‘t know if there was ever a decision there though for sure...and now I‘m guessing that would happen after Sauron Defeated (at least after part I 😂). What do you think @Daisey , and @JazzFeathers you already started re-reading with your other group right? 5y
JazzFeathers I'll read only the Hobbit with the other group, l want to reread LotR with you gals 😊 Yeah, l think we'd come to the holiday season, right? It sounds like a good time to reread LotR to me 😁 @Daisey @Riveted_Reader_Melissa @eanderson @wordslinger42 @tdrosebud @BookwormAHN

Daisey Thanks for clearing this up. I saw this book listed somewhere and was trying to figure out which one I needed to find next, The End of the Third Age or Sauron Defeated. I‘m good with whatever, reading another of the history books to finish about LotR or going into a reread. (edited) 5y
JazzFeathers I'd like to read Sauron Defeated first. But of corse l'll go with whatever the group prefers to do 😊 5y
wordslinger42 I'm happy with whatever you guys want to do, but I might prefer to read Sauron Defeated next. Plus, there's something cozy to me about reading LOTR around the holidays 😊 5y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @wordslinger42 I agree, that sounds very nice and cozy for the holidays! 5y
BookwormAHN Works for me. 5y
