A Brief History of Oversharing
A Brief History of Oversharing: One Gingeras Anthology of Humiliation | Shawn Hitchins
12 posts | 3 read | 3 to read
All hail the red, orange and pale! From the creator of Ginger Nation comes a blunt, self-effacing and hilarious stream of overly personal stories and ridiculous observations.

Mehso-so

It was okay. There were no big revelations or really rememberable stories. I think when you read a memoir or book of personal essays you come out feeling like you‘ve spent time with the author. Except for the moments where Hitchins talks about his family, I didn‘t feel that here.

Thank you Shelagh Rogers (of CBC‘s The Next Chapter) for alerting me to this funny and poignant collection of autobiographical essays by gay comedian Shawn Hitchins. I love it! “One Ginger‘s Anthology of Humiliation” is a gain for the rest of us.

This premonition was accompanied by an omnipotent voice that declared: “You will lose everything!”
I acknowledged the voice. It was Thor. (When I start hearing the voice of an omnipotent force, as an atheist, I get to select a ginger pagan option.)

Even as a gay man, it‘s very difficult to have a heart-to-heart moment while someone is nuzzling at their own anus. (From the essay ‘Holy Catrimony.‘)

It‘s like someone took a wool-knit version of me and shrunk it in the dryer.

Imagine a haunted city built into a dead volcano infested with tens of thousands of needy jugglers, actors, singers, comedians, stilt walkers, buskers, university glee clubs, and Australians—all who are subsisting on a diet of meat pies, whisky, Red Bull, and zero sleep, all who are desperately seeking your attention. On average, each act or show will have four punters in the audience.

Readergrrl I‘ll be heading there in about 10 days. My first time (does that make me a Fringe Festival Virgin?) and I‘m so excited!! Any tips for a first timer? 6y
Lindy @Readergrrl While my home city, Edmonton, has the oldest Fringe theatre festival in North America—and I love it!—nothing can compare to the original in Edinburgh. I‘ve never been, but I‘m sure you will have a great time. 6y
KathyR Greetings Fringe theatre lovers! I love the Edmonton fringe festival - it's the oldest and biggest fringe festival... in North America. The Edinburgh fringe festival is the oldest (71 years old this year) and sooo big. I was there last year for the first time and it was overwhelming. (You could put the entire Edmonton fringe in one of their larger venues.) I'm going again this year to the book and fringe festivals and really looking forward to it. 😎 6y

Lindy @KathyR Any tips for first-timer @Readergrrl ? 6y
KathyR Tips? I've only been once so I'm not sure I'm qualified to give much advice. Are you a planner or a free spirit? 6y
Readergrrl @Lindy @KathyR I think I‘m a bit of both: I like to have a plan that I can deviate from at will! 6y
KathyR I started with the fringe programme and a good detailed map of Edinburgh. I picked out the plays I really wanted to see and then looked to see where their venues were on the map. Then I tried to schedule the plays in local clusters so that I wouldn't have to walk too far to get from one play to another. I also checked to see which cafes, etc were close to the venues I would be at. I was surprised at how many of the larger venues have several theatres, and a cafe/bar, under one roof so I always checked to see exactly which theatre a play would be in. 6y
Lindy @Readergrrl @KathyR That looks like a sensible approach: planning ahead for maximum efficiency. 😊🎭 6y

My parents gave birth to a nuclear plant of homosexuality, and they stared at me in absolute fear, not knowing how to remedy the situation.
