Having rated Jennifer Government highly twice, I was looking forward to Machine Man. What started out as a 4-star read for me, ended up a 2. The first (almost-)half was darkly funny and clever. Then, it just plodded on, becoming more and more ridiculous with no real progress or development. It was a chore to finish.

Used book store haul. I loved Lexicon by Max Barry so much I couldn't pass up Machine Man. Has anyone read it?

I felt vaguely outraged that such a bad person had such a good car. Because the car was the culmination of a thousand-odd years of scientific advancement. But the guy was a dick. I wondered when that had happened; that we had started making better machines than people.

Carl existed on a plane where success was measured by physical feats. He had a brain because his body needed it, rather than the opposite. I didn't understand such people. I didn't know what they wanted, or might do.

Scientist Charles Neumann's worldview is mostly utilitarian. He judges the human body in terms of its functionality. After losing a leg in a rather darkly comic accident involving a cellphone, he receives a high quality prosthetic. He soon begins examining his remaining biological appendages & finds them lacking. His worship of utilitarian ideals of technology are carried to extremes. A satirical examination of technology & corporate excess.
