London 1849
London 1849: A Victorian Murder Story | Michael Alpert
3 posts | 6 to read
London 1849: the city is filthy, plagued, criminal and filling up with refugees from the Irish Famine and the revolutionary wars on the continent...but it is on the brink of reform as stations are built, rioters pardoned and the Great Exhibition planned. The heaving city is the backdrop for the most sensational crime and trial of the decade: the Manning murder case. Throughout the sticky summer the people of London obsessed over the fate of a dominant mysterious woman and her weak husband as the full detail of their slaughter of her lover unfolded. London 1849 follows the murder, trial and execution of the couple, interweaving the scene that was London at the time: crime, noise, cholera, overpacked slums, prostitution, law and order, prisons, fashion, shopping, finance, transport, Marx and Dickens.

Cinfhen Have u read it??? I‘ve been curious about this title!!?? 5y
Mdargusch I think there is more minutiae about Victorian life than details about the murder @Cinfhen so it depends on which part you would be interested in. 5y
Cinfhen Hmmm, that‘s good to know @Mdargusch not sure how interested I am in Victorian Life as opposed to reading about an epidemic ( which sounds more fascinating to me) 5y
emilyhaldi I haven‘t read it yet... someday!!! @Cinfhen (edited) 5y
Reviewsbylola I couldn‘t get into this one. 🤷🏼‍♀️ 5y

Dear @Cinfhen
I am crushing on this book after perusing my TBR. I want to read it to get ready for our family trip to London. After revisiting this book, I realized that the murder takes place in the neighborhood where my daughter @AnnieD is moving to this month! Thanks for being such a great Litsy friend. Congratulations!🎉 #CrushingOnGiveaway

Cinfhen You would find a true crime from the 1800's that takes place in your daughter's neighborhood 🤣😂🤣😘😘would love for you to own this book 🤞🏼☘️🤞🏼 7y
