One Eye Laughing, the Other Weeping: Diary of Julie Weiss
One Eye Laughing, the Other Weeping: Diary of Julie Weiss | Barry Denenberg
5 posts | 8 read | 6 to read
For the first time, a Dear America story is being told in two parts -- complete in one volume! Julie Weiss's world is suddenly torn apart by a war that will forever change the face of humanity. Her life as a privileged Jewish girl quickly becomes one of humiliation and terror. In part two, Julie has left Nazi Austria for New York, where she begins a new life with her extended family who she has never met.

This book is amazing! It‘s the diary of a rich Jewish girl in Austria when Hitler took over. It tells about how she went from rich to poor and how everyone who knew her treated her different. She also talks about how because she looks Aryan, people who don‘t know her treat her like any “normal” person. She has to move to New York with her aunt because it‘s safer.

#backpackEurope travelogue *fictional*
Country 27: Austria! THE HIIIILLLLS ARE ALIVE...*twirls* I HAD to do the Sound of Music tour in Salzburg, the abbey and beyond. I also visited Vienna, home of Freud, Mozart, Beethoven and more.
This book was a reread, one of my favorite Dear America books. The girl, Julie, lives through the Anschluss, but not everyone in her Jewish family is so lucky. This book was devastating to read, but so important. 5/5

AvidReader25 I did that Sound of Music tour too! 6y
bookandcat @Avidreader25 I want to do it IRL so badly! Maybe one day - it sounds amazing! 6y

Brb sobbing...how on Earth is this book exponentially harder to read now than it was when I was younger? 😭😭😭

Literary_Siren Probably because you know more of the horrors of that time. I know when I was younger I read The Diary of Anne Frank for the first time, it didn‘t really hit me. But that book gets harder and harder to read every time I pick it up. (edited) 6y
bookandcat @Literary_Siren yes I think this is true. and this time I could read between the lines about what is happening to people around her like her mother. Also current news makes books like this harder to read. 😭😭😭 6y
Literary_Siren Oh most definitely! 6y
bookandcat @Literary_Siren and now that I think of it, I've been to both the Holocaust museum and to Auschwitz, Terezin, Warsaw and more since the last time I read this, which makes it even more real. 6y
