The Banner of the Passing Clouds
The Banner of the Passing Clouds | Anthea Nicholson
3 posts | 1 read | 4 to read
The Banner of the Passing Clouds depicts life under the totalitarian communist regime in Georgia from the 50s to 90s, when Georgia gained independence from the USSR. Its compelling narrator, who is born on the day Stalin dies, is given Stalin's name by hospital nurses - Iosif Dzhugashvili. When Iosif learns of his strange link to the 'man of steel', he becomes convinced that Stalin has found a new dwelling place within his chest, a burden he both welcomes and fears. The Banner of the Passing Clouds vividly describes life in Tbilisi and gives an extraordinary insight into living under communism in Georgia. In Iosif, Anthea Nicholson has created a unique narrator: a victim of the regime, which dictates all aspects of his and his family's life, who is also complicit in its ideology and practices. As an unquestioning citizen of communism, he is disconcertingly unpleasant, yet he remains a curiously pathetic and moving figure. It is only when Iosif unwittingly destroys his family's happiness that some kind of redemption is possible for him.

I really liked this story - iosif dzhugashvili was born on the day Stalin died and his parents give him the dictators name who he then believes lives within him. We then follow his life as he grows up in Soviet controlled Georgia through to independence. The book is at times magical, political, a thriller and a love story. It takes a short while to adapt to tbe style but worth it. The photo is my preparation to start my next book.

Moray_Reads This storyline is ringing huge bells but I'm sure I haven't read it... 7y

I went to the library to return 2 bks + came back with 4. I also went crazy (thread book) and went for a book id never heard of but liked the look of and no one has been on it on litsy! The others are a supernatural crime, a dystopian sci fi, and a straight crime.
