Not a Scientist: How Politicians Mistake, Misrepresent, and Utterly Mangle Science
Not a Scientist: How Politicians Mistake, Misrepresent, and Utterly Mangle Science | Dave Levitan
14 posts | 8 read | 9 to read
An eye-opening tour of the political tricks that subvert scientific progress. The Butter-Up and Undercut. The Certain Uncertainty. The Straight-Up Fabrication. Dave Levitan dismantles all of these deceptive arguments, and many more, in this probing and hilarious examination of the ways our elected officials attack scientific findings that conflict with their political agendas. The next time you hear a politician say, "Well, Im not a scientist, but," youll be ready.

I'm reminded of this every time Trump tries to take credit for the strong economy that he inherited from President Obama.

The assumption that autism is caused by vaccins frustrates me so much. But unfortunatelly people still believe this assumption.

ReadingSusan Me too. It enrages me. I fear for the world we live in these days where facts and science are so readily discounted. (edited) 6y
Evelien @ReadingSusan just like when people think that everthing is true just because it is on the internet/facebook. 6y

Dave Levitan's examples of politicians' spewing of bad facts with the "not a scientist" disclaimer are so infuriating ?

Sace Looks like I book I would enjoy but at the same time would make me angrier than I already am. 7y
Hooked_on_books Yeah, they make it pretty clear they're not in health care (and know nothing about how it works) with some of their asinine proposals. 7y

"I'm not a scientist" has become a go-to talking point for certain politicians, most often deployed in arguments about how to combat — or whether to combat — climate change. It is a dodge, a bit of down-home hucksterism designed to marginalized those eggheads over there who actually are scientists as somehow out of touch or silly. It is a simple way to get out of the conversation entirely, and it is often accompanied by bits of misinformation...

Simply saying you're not an expert is not an appropriate introduction for trying to act like one.
