I'm Not Stiller
I'm Not Stiller | Max Frisch
5 posts | 3 read | 3 to read
The unabridged version of a haunting story of a man in prison. His wife, brother, and mistress recognize him and call him by his name, Anatol Ludwig Stiller. But he rejects them, repeatedly insisting that hes not Stiller. Could he possibly be right-or is he deliberately trying to shake off his old identity and assume a new one? Translated by Michael Bullock. A Helen and Kurt Wolff Book

#Reading1001 I enjoyed the start of this one where the narrator is denying being Stiller but the further in we get the more repetitive the story and things that he could use to prove he is not Stiller are glossed over or incorporated into the proof that he is Stiller.

A somewhat interesting look at identity that is possibly more relevant today given the fact that lives can be lived online.

BarbaraBB I felt the same about this one. It became so repetitive 11mo

Frisch and I... well, that's a special story. I never liked him, but when I reread Homo Faber last year, I found myself liking the book. So I gave Mr. Frisch another chance. Turns out we either don't get along, anyways, or I have to read all his books twice. I've wanted to read I'm Not Stiller for a very long time - the idea of the story sounds very intriguing. ⬇

Jari-chan But all in all the book is just another boring love story. It might would've worked for me if the book was kept shorter. Bit since this wasn't the case I bored myself through 400 pages... 🙄

TheAromaofBooks Oh no that's wayyy too long to be bored! 2y
Jari-chan @TheAromaofBooks It sure is, but I wanted to finish the book anyways... 😅 2y

TheAromaofBooks Honestly, I've been there. I'm not sure what keeps me going sometimes! 😂 2y
Jari-chan @TheAromaofBooks Same here 😁 😁 😁 2y
Liz_M I read this. I have no memory of the story and only retain a faint distaste for the book. 😁 2y
Jari-chan @Liz_M That's the Frisch effect - it's the same with me and his books 😅 2y

September #BookspingBingo board cleared. Happily, I'm not as far behind with my reviews as last month. Still, I wanted to post more yesterday, but life thought otherwise. I'm on my way, though 😄

My list for October is almost finished. Just need to decide what to add to numbers 19 & 20 😅

batsy Holiday in Switzerland, how fun! I've heard quite a bit about Frisch by readers on Twitter. And the old Penguin covers are so good 💙 7y
Moray_Reads @batsy this one is very spotted but I bought it in a fantastic secund hand bookshop that's in an old railway station. I loved I'm Not Stiller, it's a really fascinating, philosophical read 7y
batsy @Moray_Reads Excellent find! I'll have to add this to my TBR 7y
Moray_Reads @batsy I really recommend it (and I have no idea why autocorrect changed second like that!) 7y
tricours How do you like Sapkowski? I started reading the first book in his series before moving, but the book is somewhere in a box now so I never got past the first 20 pages. 7y
Moray_Reads @tricours It's still TBR 😶 but my colleague is racing about his short stories so I'm hoping to finally get to it over the Easter weekend 7y
Cinfhen My current read is set in Switzerland and it's fantastic 7y
