Stranger Magic
Stranger Magic: Charmed States and the Arabian Nights | Marina Warner
2 posts | 2 read | 6 to read
Our foremost theorist of myth, fairytale, and folktale explores the magical realm of the imagination where carpets fly and genies grant prophetic wishes. Stranger Magic examines the profound impact of the Arabian Nights on the West, the progressive exoticization of magic, and the growing acceptance of myth and magic in contemporary experience.

Image of the cover jinni is by British artist Errol Le Cain. The style is a tribute to Eastern manuscript illuminations, taken from the edition of Aladdin retold by Andrew Lang (Faber & Faber, 1981).

Marina Warner writes about myths, fairytale, and folklore and this one traces the influence of Arabian Nights on Western culture. This is the only book of hers I've read so far and would love to read more. #genieinabottle #AugustGrrrl @Cinfhen
