A Small Revolution | Jimin Han
9 posts | 7 read | 10 to read
In this powerful, page-turning debut, Jimin Han deftly shows that revolutionswhether big or small, in the world or of the heartcan have an impact that lasts through time and spans the oceans. On a beautiful Pennsylvania fall morning, a gunman holds college freshman Yoona Lee and three of her classmates hostage in the claustrophobic confines of their dorm room. The desperate man with his finger on the triggerYoonas onetime friend, Lloyd Kangis unraveling after a mysterious accident in Korea killed his closest friend, Jaesung, who was also the love of Yoonas life. As the tense standoff unfolds, Yoona is forced to revisit her past, from growing up in an abusive household to the upheaval in her ancestral homeland to unwittingly falling in love. She must also confront the truth about what happened to Jaesung on that tragic day, even as her own fate hangs in the balance. Through scenes of political upheaval and protests in South Korea, spirited conversations in cramped dumpling houses, and the quiet moments that happen when two people fall in love, A Small Revolution is a moving narrative brimming with longing, love, fear, andultimatelyhope.

Well that was unexpected! Thanks to @Sweettartlaura for putting this book on my radar. A hostage situation playing out on a small liberal arts college in Pennsylvania, set during the 1980s. It‘s currently free on #KindleUnlimited. Took a little bit of time to get used to the writing style but once I did, I became absorbed in the story. Maybe some traces from the Virginia Tech case in 2007. More about politics/ MH than glorifying gun violence.

Sweettartlaura Yay!!! So glad you liked it 🙂. It was completely engrossing, yes? 5y

Go read this book.
I really don‘t know what to say that won‘t give something away.
It‘s short and intense - I read it in 3 hours.
And now I need a serious palate cleanser, or this will linger with me for a week.
Read this book!❤️ 📚

Mehso-so

⭐⭐⭐ and a half. My rating for this book. It's sad, so be prepared for that if you read it. That said, it moves quickly once you get used to the back and forth. I thought there were some things left unresolved, but overall, don't mind that I read it and would read something else by this author.

I was surprised by this one. I really enjoyed it and the style it was written in. I was drawn in by the way Yoona was talking to Jaesung. I loved their backstory and the way politics in Korean played an strange role in progressing the plot even though the story itself takes place in the US. There was a lot more to it then I expected of story about a hostage situation in a college.

Bailedbailed

Um, no. Pet peeve number 1,023: novels that open with emotionally intense, violent scenes before I get any sense of who the people are. I feel manipulated. (Plus the writing was poor.)

Another intriguing-sounding novel out of South Korea! Here reviewed by Jung Yun, whose novel Shelter I haven't been able to stop thinking about since I finished it six or so months back.

saresmoore Well, I haven't read Shelter, so you've just added two books to my TBR. 🙂 7y

Anybody else convinced that Lloyd caused the fatal crash with his paranoid delusions? This work of fiction is an effective cautionary tale that shows exactly what type of red flags you need to look for in relationships of all kinds. This was heart breaking all around, and I'm going to go binge Great British Bakeoff to ease out of this funk.
