The Guns Above
The Guns Above | Robyn Bennis

Patrick OBrian and Honor Harrington join forces in Robyn Benniss adventurous military fantasy debut about a nation's first female airship captain. They say its not the fall that kills you. For Josette Dupre, the Corps first female airship captain, it might just be a bullet in the back. On top of patrolling the front lines, she must also contend with a crew who doubts her expertise, a new airship that is an untested deathtrap, and the foppish aristocrat Lord Bernat, a gambler and shameless flirt with the military know-how of a thimble. Hes also been assigned to her ship to catalog her every moment of weakness and indecision. When the enemy makes an unprecedented move that could turn the tide of the war, can Josette deal with Bernat, rally her crew, and survive long enough to prove herself? Steampunky navy-in-the-air military tale full of sass and terrific characters. Great storytelling. Loved it. Patricia Briggs

Pickpick

Just finished reading it and enjoyed it. It started great, I really loved the first few chapters. It didn't continue as good as it started in my opinion, way too much description of the battles, also of the actual ship. But quite a few characters were greatly done and it was a good read overall so I consider it a pick.

My TBR pile is huge but can't resist a used books sale at the library.

Curiouser_and_curiouser Me too!! My recent haul was 65 books from the local op shop where there was a sale on. 3 for $1! Irresistible 😄 4y

“These bumpkins may not care which side of the border they‘re on, but I do. If destroying some old bridge can better our odds by the minutest fraction, you may consider that bridge destroyed. I‘ll destroy their bridge, and their mill and their granary for good measure, and I‘ll do the same in every goddamn village and hamlet from here to Arle.“ #BloodAndThunder

“May I remind you that you‘re aboard an airship,” she said. “Nothing we do is entirely safe.”
He frowned. “I mean to say, where would we be if a stray spark set off one of these shells?”
She stared at him. “Technically speaking? We‘d be in a lot of places. The surrounding woods and countryside, to begin with. If these winds hold up, parts of us might even make it to Halachia.”
“Well, I‘ve always liked to travel.”

Pickpick

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ A fun, witty read that didn‘t take itself too seriously. The worldbuilding wasn‘t terribly original and I got lost in some of the technical descriptions of ships and the military, but I really enjoyed the characters and I thought the plot was well-paced (a compliment I hardly give to any books!). Would recommend to anyone looking for a fun steampunk read.

jpmcwisemorgan I‘m planing to read this prior to GenCon. I‘m glad to see your review. 6y
Lylah @jpmcwisemorgan it was a pretty quick read for a 350-page book! The writing is smooth and unobstructive 6y
