I enjoyed this although not as much as The glorious heresies. Maureen one of my favourite characters ever is muted in this volume. It is very focused on Ryan cusack a pretty motherless young drug dealer caught in underworld Cork and out of his depth It‘s a book about poverty of options survival and love. I will read the final part The rules of revelation when it comes out in paperback. **** rather than the ***** of the first part.

She didn‘t know what to make of me. So I had to explain, my mam used to make it all the time. She died though. That made her think about it. She said, c‘mere pet. In between serving other customers she wrote down a recipe for a risotto, like the plain one, with butter and cheese and onions. She gave me this little tub of stock stuff as well, and she didn‘t charge me. I suppose there is something about a hungry young fella that charms

Started this yesterday. So far it is not the tour de force of the first part of the trilogy. But 100 pages in Maureen makes her presence felt and things are looking up!

Bailedbailed

Littens, I don‘t like bailing on books, especially when it‘s an author I like. I loved The Glorious Heresies, but just can‘t get into this one. The characters and street-life are real, but I can‘t follow the story. It‘s a bit of a jumble. I‘m sure it becomes clear in the end & I do love her humour, but I have too much else to read to persevere. I‘ll stay tuned for her next one though. 🤓

Progress report: I‘ve knocked off a few of the heavier books but still have some daunting ones left. The Blood Miracles might be next (a fun read). I‘ve failed on the book buying ban so my TBR shelf is still full! Also, I left two of the books in Hong Kong so I may swap them out. 🙈📚 #tbrbingo

WhatDeeReads Only scene titles left! You‘re so close. 6y
Abailliekaras @ClairesReads I‘m daunted by it I admit. 😬 but it may be my next read... 6y
ClairesReads @Abailliekaras definitely worth it! 6y

I guess I would have preferred for this to go off in a new direction rather than offer a new perspective on characters we'd already met. The dialog is still top class, but the plotting got a little overwrought and Ryan's back and forth between the women who continuously want to have sex with him despite his weakness and general stupidity is hardly the stuff of Shakespearean tragedy. Still, entertaining, just less so than the previous volume.

ReadingEnvy Great cover, but I'm not sure I want to recover that ground, hmm. 6y

Finally got around to do my May reading wrap-up. I finished 5 books so it was a normal reading month for me.

My favorite this month was "The Blood Miracles".

Mehso-so

Lisa McInerney's sequel to THE GLORIOUS HERESIES is a strangely flat affair that lacks the fizz and pace that made its predecessor so entertaining, partly because for someone involved in the gangster world, Ryan's awfully surprised by all the crosses and double crosses while Natalie and Karine make for two tedious sides of a listless love triangle so that ultimately I didn't care enough about him to feel invested in the ending.

I just raced through this book. This is the sequel to LM's debut, but now the focus is on Ryan and how he gets in over his head. His story just drew me in and I couldn't stop reading. Can I hope for a third book about Ryan?
