The Long Dry | 
pickIt's a short lyrical anti-pastoral novella, set on a farm during drought, when one cow has wandered off, another will begin calving at any time, the aging dog must be put down, and the farmer wonders how long he'll be able to keep doing this, and worries he'll never bridge the growing distance between himself and his wife. The melancholy gets a bit thick sometimes, but the prose is brilliant.
