Axeman of New Orleans: The True Story
Axeman of New Orleans: The True Story | Miriam C Davis
6 posts | 5 read | 8 to read
From 1910 to 1919, New Orleans suffered at the hands of its very own Jack the Ripper-style killer. The story has been the subject of websites, short stories, novels, a graphic novel, and most recently the FX television series American Horror Story. But the full story of gruesome murders, sympathetic victims, accused innocents, public panic, the New Orleans Mafia, and a mysterious killer has never been written. Until now. The Axeman repeatedly broke into the homes of Italian grocers in the dead of night, leaving his victims in a pool of blood. Iorlando Jordano, an innocent Italian grocer, and his teenaged son Frank were wrongly accused of one of those murders; corrupt officials convicted them with coerced testimony. Miriam C. Davis here expertly tells the story of the search for the Axeman and of the eventual exoneration of the innocent Jordanos. She proves that the person mostly widely suspected of being the Axeman was not the killer. She also shows what few have suspected--that the Axeman continued killing after leaving New Orleans in 1919. Only thirty years after Jack the Ripper stalked the streets of Whitechapel, the Axeman of New Orleans held an American city hostage. This book tells that story.

For me this was a solid read. It is about a true set of crimes that have never been solved. The Axeman has shown up in some popular shows such as AHS Coven as a strong secondary character. Whether a Hollywood take or from a historical crime POV this will appeal to fans of true crime novels. #TeamMonsterMash #Scarathlon #bookspin @StayCurious @TheAromaofBooks

This book had some interesting parts involving the history of the notorious axeman who killed several people over many years in New Orleans. Sadly though, it didn't hold my attention throughout. Some sections were strong, others felt like they needed more research to fully flush out the story.

vivastory Whenever I hear about The Axeman I inevitably think about my fave season of American Horror Story 2y

Just finished this #audiobook on my walk to the bookstore. It was only OK for me. Lots of details but kinda boring. Maybe because I was somewhat familiar with the tale of the axe man, or maybe it just wasn‘t great as an audio. Dunno 🤷🏻‍♀️ I finished it but won‘t remember any of those many details.

Started off my #LitsyAtoZ with this one that I checked out from the library in December and never got around to reading last year.

I have been fascinated with this case ever since it was brought up in American Horror Story and thought this book was really well written and researched. It bounced around a little bit in ways that didn‘t totally make sense to me but overall I enjoyed it.
