Scarlett Bernard is used to cleaning up messes. As a human who cancels out any magic around her, Scarlett's job is to keep the supernatural world hidden-at any cost. But on the eve of the Vampire Trials, a two-day tribunal that allows the otherworldly community to air their grievances, Scarlett receives a blood-soaked message from Molly, her estranged former roommate. Molly, a vampire, had been living with twelve human college students...and in one terrible night, she slaughtered them all. Scarlett believes Molly's been set up, but no one else in the Old World agrees with her. Meanwhile, the true perpetrator is determined to make sure Molly goes on trial for the massacre-and the penalty is death. With less than two days to prove her friend's innocence, Scarlett calls on former LAPD detective Jesse Cruz to help her dig into Molly's past. But no one-Molly included-wants Scarlett and Jesse to bring the terrible truth to light.

Midnight Curse is the first of three books in a new series about Scarlett Bernard. She's a null, which means she negates all magic around her. Her ability serves a unique purpose for the supernaturals she works for and with, but of course it's never simple. I like Scarlett's doubts about herself and her life, because she's also trying to grow as a null and a human. She gets into some fun messes too!

BarbaraTheBibliophage @minkyb Null is kind of an odd term, isn't it? 7y

Haha. I had to laugh at the Beauty and the Beast reference in my latest supernatural / urban fantasy read! Vampires like books, who knew?

ScrappyMags I need one of those libraries... even on some Kindles 😂 7y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @ScrappyMags Me too. Not quite the production value on Kindle. But who cares? It's BOOKS! 7y
underthebelljar Got to fill the time somehow if you're immortal 😂 7y

BarbaraTheBibliophage @BookishJess No doubt. Vampires don't get to say "so many books, so little time," do they? 7y
willreadforfeels I really enjoy this author. And the library was one of the best things about Beauty & the Beast! Although this post reminded me I need to publish my review of this book, especially since I just picked up the next one in the series! 7y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @willreadforfeels I really enjoy this author two. I grabbed the next book on NetGalley, not realizing I had this one still unread on my Kindle shelf. So I'll read book two from this trilogy as soon as I finish this one! Looking forward to hearing your review when you read it too. 7y
willreadforfeels @BarbaraTheBibliophage: reread book 1 and read book 2 over the weekend. Book 2 torpedoes you with feels 7y

Oops. I intended to start the book on the right tonight. Still working my way through my NetGalley shelf. Then I discovered it's #2 in a trilogy. Turns out I had the first book on my Kindle shelf and never got to it. Now I'll be reading both of them! 😜😜📚📚

The start of Olsen's third trilogy in her "Old World" books again follows Scarlett, Eli and Jesse, but is set appropriately three years after their first trilogy. Mystery, blood, dilemmas and pain once again abound but it's great to see growth from the familiar characters as once again, someone's past comes back to them in spades.
