The Book of Forgiving
The Book of Forgiving: The Fourfold Path for Healing Ourselves and Our World | Desmond Tutu, Mpho Tutu
11 posts | 7 read | 3 reading | 9 to read
Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Nobel Peace Prize winner, Chair of The Elders, and Chair of South Africas Truth and Reconciliation Commission, along with his daughter, the Reverend Mpho Tutu, offer a manual on the art of forgivenesshelping us to realize that we are all capable of healing and transformation. Tutu's role as the Chair of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission taught him much about forgiveness. If you asked anyone what they thought was going to happen to South Africa after apartheid, almost universally it was predicted that the country would be devastated by a comprehensive bloodbath. Yet, instead of revenge and retribution, this new nation chose to tread the difficult path of confession, forgiveness, and reconciliation. Each of us has a deep need to forgive and to be forgiven. After much reflection on the process of forgiveness, Tutu has seen that there are four important steps to healing: Admitting the wrong and acknowledging the harm; Telling one's story and witnessing the anguish; Asking for forgiveness and granting forgiveness; and renewing or releasing the relationship. Forgiveness is hard work. Sometimes it even feels like an impossible task. But it is only through walking this fourfold path that Tutu says we can free ourselves of the endless and unyielding cycle of pain and retribution. The Book of Forgiving is both a touchstone and a tool, offering Tutu's wise advice and showing the way to experience forgiveness. Ultimately, forgiving is the only means we have to heal ourselves and our aching world.

Lovely audio about the process of forgiveness. There are activities in each section for journaling and a stone exercise to help visualize moving on from a hurt, forgiving someone or yourself.

A convicting book that shows a path to emotional freedom. His words are straightforward and easy to comprehend, but Tutu‘s thoughts on forgiveness are profound and challenging. Grace can be found here.

There is a book I want to read that is locked inside a library in Lake Arrowhead. Grrrr ...

Bars are open. I can get a drink and sit around while pepple breathe all over me, but I can't place holds and pick them up curbside.

A friend is getting a group together to read tagged and discuss on Zoom. I want in, but I'm broke and the library's still closed. It's not on Overdrive. Grrr.

Not my biggest problem, but what's bugging me at the moment. 🤪

Chelsea.Poole That's frustrating! 😣 Our library is open now but while it was closed you could still contact someone to access your card information to get hooked up with overdrive/hoopla. Maybe try calling or emailing...? 4y
SleepyDragon @Chelsea.Poole I've been using Overdrive, but they county hasn't purchase this particular title in digital format. 4y

CogsOfEncouragement Ugh, I‘m sorry. Our city library opens today. Returns go in the outdoor drop off bin. Check outs are by online request and then an appointment time for outdoor pickup. 4y
Susanita From some of the posts from librarians on Twitter, I think it may have something to do with PPE for library staff? But yeah this patchwork approach to reopening is a little weird. 4y
SleepyDragon @CogsOfEncouragement That's all I want. Well, that and a virtual SRP for the kids online. I asked the district on FB about a summer reading program, and they said vaguely that they plan to do one "when they reopen in phase 3." I don't know if I want to take my 4 yr olds to in person programs this summer. All I want is to return the books I'm afraid my 12 yr old will misplace before they take them back and curbside pickup of holds. 4y
SleepyDragon @Susanita I mean, I get that different areas have to reopen slower than others, but I can literally go into Barnes and Noble and browse now, but the library can't do curbside? That's what baffles me. 4y

Does Desmond Tutu count as a celebrity? 😃He's definitely at the top of my list! Had to tag a different book, this one isn't on Litsy. I had the pleasure of meeting him in South Africa in 2000...a life-changing experience!
