This updated edition of National Book Award-winning and New York Times bestselling author Louise Erdrichs 1998 novel now features fascinating new content, a new title, new cover art, and a new foreword by the authora riveting story that explores tensions between Native American and white cultures. Audacious and surprising One of Americas most distinctive fictional voices.Boston Globe When Klaus Shawano abducts Sweetheart Calico, the seductive Indian woman who has stolen his heart, and takes her far from her native Montana plains to his own Minneapolis home, he cannot begin to imagine the eventual ramifications his brazen act will entail. Shawanos mysterious Antelope Woman has utterly mesmerized himand soon proves to be a bewitching agent of chaos whose effect on others is disturbing and irresistible, as she alters the shape of things around her and the shape of things to come. The Roy and Shawano families have been inextricably intertwined for generations and, unbeknownst to them, the mysterious Antelope Woman is a part of their fierce and haunting history. Antelope Woman ingeniously illuminates how that history affects the contemporary descendants of these families who are the products of two cultures, Ojibwe and white, which sit in uneasy relationship to one another. In this remarkable updated edition of her acclaimed novel, Louise Erdrich weaves an unforgettable tapestry of ancestry, fate, harrowing tragedy, and redemption that seems at once modern and eternal.

The Antelope Woman character is haunting. Dreams and omens leak into my life as I was reading this. The story is told in pieces by several characters‘ point of view. There is a family tree in the first pages that helps. I like Almost Soup. I bet you will, too. The urban setting feels close and gritty. The rez, open. Paraphrase: This is “a new book partly made from the old book,” The Antelope Wife. I haven‘t read the old one. This one is great.

The story was interesting but I just could not get into it. The writing was so fragmented I had to piece together who was talking, all the characters and how they were connected and when something was happening. It was almost as bad as season 2 of Westworld.

Just like the tapestry woven above, this novel has many threads but at its core is a family saga with a slight magical edge. It is by turns funny, heartbreaking, and profound.

My spirit animal is the African Greater Kudu, because they are quite tall (which I can relate to) and majestic (which I can't). Thanks for #payingitforward @CoffeeCatsBooks!

Who knows any given day what season it will be in STL. 9°F now; 60s last week. Though as I've mentioned before, I'm a masochist and actually love #dreamingofacolderclimate when it's already cold outside, and Louise Erdrich is often my fix. Next up is The Antelope Wife (so weird that I've recently seen it being republished as Antelope Woman 🤔). I have no idea how or if extreme winter will manifest itself here, but I'll find out! #ReadJanuary

rachellayown I love Louise Erdrich! 7y
LindsayReads @rachellayown Meeeeeee, too. SUCH an author crush. I want to visit Minneapolis solely for her bookstore (though I hear it's a wonderful city besides). 7y
rachellayown YES, major author crush on my end too. And I want to get there as well. I went many years ago (before the bookstore opened) and would love to go back. 7y

Mind blown. Beautiful and heart-wrenching story. Native American mythology, symbolism, windigo, magical realism.

Loved.

Enjoying a little Native American literature on a cloudy, cool Saturday. Beautiful and lyrical, though I am not yet sure what exactly is going on in this story. Erdrich has me hooked.

MrBook Welcome to @Litsy ! We hope you enjoy your stay, I think you'll like it here 😎👍🏻. 8y

It took me longer than I expected given it's a pretty short book but not a word is wasted. Warrants a reread for sure. Magical realism plus Native American culture plus unclear narration - confusing at times but totally worth the effort.

Because I can't read just one book at a time. Lunch companion.
