Lena Finkle's Magic Barrel
Lena Finkle's Magic Barrel: A Graphic Novel | Anya Ulinich
7 posts | 8 read | 3 to read
*A New York Times Notable Book* Funny, painful, outrageous . . . Anya Ulinich is the David Sedaris of Russian-American cartoonists. Gary Shteyngart Anya Ulinich turns her sharp eye toward the strange, often unmooring world of grown-up dating in this darkly comic graphic novel. After her fifteen-year marriage ends, Lena Finkle gets an eye-opening education in love, sex, and loss when she embarks on a string of online dates, all while raising her two teenage daughters. The Vampire of Bensonhurst, the Orphan, Disaster Man, and the Diamond Psychiatrist are just a few of the unforgettable characters she meets along the way. Evoking Louis C. K.s humor and Amy Winehouses longing and anguish, and paying homage to Malamud and Chekhov, Lena Finkles Magic Barrel is a funny and moving story, beautifully told.

Those yoga classes where you're supposed to lie there with nothing to do, and the teacher tells you to empty your mind...

ChaoticMissAdventures When people started to reveal lately that they have no inner monologue??? The idea is completely foreign to me my mind is constantly talking. 2y
KathyWheeler @ChaoticMissAdventures My husband told me that, and I was shocked. I cannot imagine having no inner monologue. 2y

ravenlee I once had a teacher criticize my use of “inner dialogue,” telling me it‘s monologue. I remember thinking, “you mean you only have a single voice in your head? Because I have some SERIOUS discussion/disagreement going on in my head most of the time.” 2y
ChaoticMissAdventures @ravenlee when typing it out I was like mono? One? People have one? I am with you so many in there! 2y
ravenlee @ChaoticMissAdventures @KathyWheeler what must that be like? Are there crickets in there? Tumbleweeds? Is there bland, elevator-type music playing? 2y
KathyWheeler @ravenlee He claims there‘s just nothing. I don‘t understand how that can possibly be. 2y
ChaoticMissAdventures @KathyWheeler I keep wondering are these the people who are able to meditate? Can I not meditate because of the monologues?? 2y
KathyWheeler @ChaoticMissAdventures I was never able to meditate because of that. What finally worked for me was learning that you don‘t have to empty your mind to meditate. Also guided meditation using an app like Headspace or Calm. 2y
charl08 @chaoticmissadventures @KathyWheeler @ravenlee this is a fascinating convo. I had no idea some people are inner voice free either... 2y

Pickpick

I opened this book to a random page & made an incorrect assumption about what it was going to be about (a woman dating, post divorce in an urban fantasy setting) which was not even close! It is the story of a woman dating after divorce- but it‘s very much set in the real world, falling in love & having her heart broken in a way that is new to her... I didn‘t find it humorous but I enjoyed the reflections on dating, class & life as an immigrant.

LapReader Nice use of Kip & Co. I used mine for a pic too. 4y

I was really surprised by this graphic novel and the content. It was definitely a lot heavier in content than I expected. The author has a really unique voice and she talks about Russian culture and immigration to America, but also relationships and her experiences with love and family. I really liked this and would definitely recommend it.

I didn't find it as funny as everyone else seems to (which was disappointing) but I thought the graphic novel format was a nice way to bring the story to life.

This isn't a book I'd normally pick up but hearing this blurb on a recent episode of Book Riot's Get Booked really intrigued me.
