Great book about domestic work, civil rights, and racism. It tackles many heavy topics and is also quite funny! I wish more had changed in the 60+ years since this book was published. Highly recommended. #womenauthors #women #domesticwork #racism #civilrights

"Oh honey, you don't have to look at this [movie] because I can tell you how it will end....Well, the white men will kill the chief and his medicine man, take all the gold and head back for civilization with the pretty white woman who has been queen of the jungle ever since she was dropped from an aeroplane when she was three years old....Yes, sure, they all like that!"
-"So Much For Nothing"

Something really stressful and scary happened tonight (it's okay now, but BPD doesn't let me calm down, sometimes for several days), so I'm unwinding by rereading one of the funniest and most incisive books I've ever read, one that's also been on my "to reread" list for a while.

batsy I'm sorry to hear that. Are you OK? 6y
Bertha_Mason Thank you 😓 I'm getting there, mentally. I had a hot shower and some tea, because Sylvia Plath was right, and the adrenaline is running down considerably. I really appreciate your concern. ☺ 6y
batsy I'm glad to hear that. I hope you progressively feel better ❤️ 6y

I'm glad I got the chance to read this for #BlackHistoryMonth. Alice Childress' novel provides great insight into what life was like for a domestic worker in Harlem in the 50s. Her main character, Mildred, is everything I aspire to be as a woman: fierce, independent, able to speak her mind, and not willing to put up with anyone's nonsense. Plus, the new edition has a foreword from Roxanne Gay! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Today's #bookmail is totally on point for the first day of #blackhistorymonth - a reprint of the 1956 novel about two women, both domestic servants, and their experiences and perspectives on life.
