Luna: Wolf Moon
Luna: Wolf Moon | Ian McDonald

Corta Helio, one of the five family corporations that rule the Moon, has fallen. Its riches are divided up among its many enemies, its survivors scattered. Eighteen months have passed. The remaining Helio children, Lucasinho and Luna, are under the protection of the powerful Asamoahs, while Robson, still reeling from witnessing his parent's violent deaths, is now a ward - virtually a hostage - of Mackenzie Metals. And the last appointed heir, Lucas, has vanished from the surface of the moon. Only Lady Sun, dowager of Taiyang, suspects that Lucas Corta is not dead, and - more to the point - that he is still a major player in the game. After all, Lucas always was a schemer, and even in death, he would go to any lengths to take back everything and build a new Corta Helio, more powerful than before. But Corta Helio needs allies, and to find them, the fleeing son undertakes an audacious, impossible journey - to Earth. In an unstable lunar environment, the shifting loyalties and political machinations of each family reach the zenith of their most fertile plots as outright war between the families erupts.

The first novel was good, but I never expected the second to be such a page-turner! 🤩 Two nights I've spent with this roller-coaster of intrigues, betrayals and epic disasters, unable to put the book away. I totally love McDonald's world, alien but at the same time so detailed it could be real. The only failure is wasted romantic line, the book would've been perfect without it. Can't wait to see how the trilogy ends!! #wolfmoon #McDonald

Exbrarian I have just started learning Russian and I was so pleased that I could (barely) read that cover! 5y
Violetta @Exbrarian 👍 Russian is a difficult language to learn, so I wish you good luck with it! 5y

A slightly confusing timeline keeps this book from being as good as its predecessor, but we're talking the difference between ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ and ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2. Seeing the surviving Cortas trying to get on with their lives after the devastating losses of the previous book makes for compelling reading, and the ending sets the stage for a major finale. I'm incredibly excited for the final book next week.

This is my second read through and I'm two chapters from the end and I *just* realized the story isn't being told in exact chronological order and suddenly things make a lot more sense...

The reread continues! Book three comes out in just over a month, so I should have plenty of time to read book two again.

I loved the first book in this series and this sequel kept delivering the same action mixed with politics. I can hardly wait for the concluding book, which should be out this summer.

I never felt like the Game Of Thrones comparisons this series received made sense, but towards the end of book two the Corta kids definitely felt like the Stark children: spread out across the world, separated from their parents, and very much in danger. Book one was more about the older generation, but this time more of the focus is on the Corta grandchildren.

I can't say enough good things about this series! Like all of my favourite sci-fi, from Dune to Ancillary Justice, it drops you into the deep end in a fully realized and complex world then lets you sink or swim. Wolf Moon shows the fallout of the war between the Cortas & Mackenzies, which is just the first skirmish in the battle for the Moon. The ending is satisfying but leaves things open for book 3 (which can't get here soon enough). ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I really want to finish this book tonight but I also don't want this book to end.

This book has a character death scene in it that's so well written I'm still thinking about it more than 12 hours later.

Interesting use of pronouns in this series. Beyond he/she and him/her there's a e/er combination and a né/ner one, neither of which I'm completely clear on usage for. Could be used to describe different genders, could be cultural (lots of different nationalities represented on the moon).

The Cortas had flair. Lady Sun often regrets destroying them for something as inelegant as profit.

Luna: New Moon was one of the best books I read in 2016. With corporate dynasties fighting it out on the hostile frontier of Earth's moon in the 22nd century, it felt like Dune meets Dallas. The richly developed universe created by Ian McDonald requires not just a glossary but also several pages devoted to outlining its sprawling cast. Now the sequel is out, and I'm so excited to jump back into this amazing world with Luna: Wolf Moon.

Just realized the sequel to Luna: New Moon comes out on Tuesday! Need to get cracking on Behind The Throne so I can finish it in time to start this book as soon as it's released. I've been waiting on it since last January!

One year ago today I finished reading Luna: New Moon, which ended up being one of the best books I read in 2016. This sequel is due in March, and I hope it's one of the best books I read in 2017.
