Soiled Doves
Soiled Doves: Prostitution in the Early West | Anne Seagraves
7 posts | 8 read
Soiled Doves tells of the grey world of prostitution and the women who participated in the oldest profession. Colorful, if not socially acceptable, these ladies of easy virtue were a definite part of the early West -- Wearing ruffled petticoats with fancy bows, they were glamorous and plain, good and bad and many were as wild as the land they came to tame.

It didn't have quite the amount of history I was hoping for, but I still found it to be an interesting read. It gave stories to sex workers who were barely considered human even though a lot of them did a lot of good. Most of the stories were tragic. Some chapters were just heartbreaking. Chapter 8 was a pretty hard read, but there was a hero. Seemed like it covered mostly known women. I would have liked a few more stories of more obscure women.

A solid 3.5 stars. Easily readable and the pictures are worth it. The stories of these girls!!! You can tell the author had a lot of respect for these women. More stories about the girls then historical perspective but still lovely!

Hollie @tpixie going back for more books today and more research looking into the brothels at Old Fort Hays! 5y
tpixie @Hollie awesome! I find it interesting that that‘s about the only job women could have back then - to be independent 5y

Just finished this great read! Not enough credit is given to the business women who were often the backbone of their towns economy, expected to donate and contribute their funds to the betterment of the town but shunned as outcasts. Also interestingly, these women were often times first to assist in times of need acting as nurses and caring for the ill. The more you know!
