Surrender, Dorothy
Surrender, Dorothy: A Novel | Meg Wolitzer
4 posts | 4 read | 6 to read
For years, Sara Swerdlow was transported by an unfettered sense of immortality. Floating along on loving friendships and the adoration of her mother, Natalie, Sara's notion of death was entirely alien to her existence. But when a summer night's drive out for ice cream ends in tragedy, thirty-year-old Sara -- "held aloft and shimmering for years" -- finally lands. Mining the intricate relationship between love and mourning, acclaimed novelist Meg Wolitzer explores a single, overriding question: who, finally, "owns" the excruciating loss of this young woman -- her mother or her closest friends? Depicting the aftermath of Sara's shocking death with piercing humor and shattering realism, Surrender, Dorothy is the luminously thoughtful, deeply moving exploration of what it is to be a mother and a friend, and, above all, what it takes to heal from unthinkable loss.

Sara Swerdlow goes to spend every summer in a rundown locals‘s house in the Hamptons with close friends, Adam, Maddy, and Peter. The first night there in the first chapter she is killed in an accident. Sara was an only child of her single mother/best friend, Natalie Swerdlow. Natalie will take Sara‘s place at the summer house where her and Sara‘s friends will try to heal. Read this in order to gear up for Meg‘s new book this month and was not 👇🏼

Reggie disappointed at all. I felt like a wheel of emotions and Meg kept 🎶spinning me right round like a record, baby, right round, round, round.🎶 6y

I read and reviewed all three of these novels for my #WolitzerBacklist project! https://youtu.be/jJhsYgK9j14. I liked them all very much, but SUREENDER, DOROTHY (far right) was undoubtedly my favorite. Chronicling a summer spent between people after a friend/daughter suddenly dies, this book probes the ego-centric nature of relationships. How do you see other people? You are always the center of your own story. Both sad and funny about life.

Cinfhen Sounds good, Im willing to give Meg Wolitzer another chance even though I HATED 7y
chavalah @Cinfhen I loved THE INTERESTINGS, but I hope this book rec works for you! 7y
Cinfhen Thanks! Most people I know loved it too 7y
Reggie I read the The Wife and The Interestings and loved them both. I‘ve just started Surrender Dorothy as I anxiously await her next one next month. 6y

I loved two other books by Meg Wolitzer, so I tried this one. Don't bother unless you're trying to punish yourself - it's not an enjoyable read, and the ending only brought immense relief on my part.
