City of Miracles
City of Miracles | Robert Jackson Bennett
The third entry in Bennett's acclaimed Divine Cities fantasy series "Where your shadow falls there shall be night everlasting. And all shall dwell within the night, and the night shall swallow all . . ." Sigrud je Harkvaldsson has nothing left to live for. He is a fugitive and an exile, wanted for murder throughout the empire of Saypur. His entire existence has seemed only to visit suffering and death upon those he wants most to protect--while he himself has emerged from each battle cruelly unscathed, inexplicably immune to forces both natural and divine. Then his closest friend and ally, former Prime Minister Shara Komayd, is assassinated. Suddenly, Sigrud's life has a purpose: to find Shara's killers and make them suffer for what they've done. Yet as he pursues his quarry with his customary terrifying efficiency, Sigrud learns that far more than revenge is at stake. Because Shara's assassin is no mere mortal, and her murder was just the beginning.

A beautiful, bittersweet ending to a fantastic trilogy.

This series is a mix of politics, mystery, and fantasy. Filled with action scenes and full characters, I would recommend this trilogy to everyone!

Very good end to a very very good fantasy trilogy, set in a world where the gods have recently disappeared (well, *mostly* disappeared), leaving imbalances of power that some hope to remedy and others to exploit. This one opens by killing off a major character, moves a secondary character to the lead role, pits him against an effectively menacing villain, and ends the series with a satisfying bang. Now to grab Foundryside while it's still new ...

TorieStorieS I literally just got this book in the mail!!! Now I‘m even more excited to re-read the first one and complete the trilogy!! 14mo

Forgot to post this review! I don‘t read a lot of fantasy, but this series is my absolute favorite. A bold claim, I know, but the characters and world building are simply superb. This was a perfect, bittersweet end to the series. All three books in the trilogy have been 5-star reads!

cariashley If anyone is wondering, the first book is 2y

I love these books by Bennett so much. I‘m trying to savor it since it‘s the last of the trilogy but it‘s just SO GOOD I can‘t put it down.

Bianca I never finished reading the first one in this series. I think I fell into a reading slump because of anxiety/stress. I remember liking what I did read a lot, though. Thanks for reminding me it exists. Putting it back on my tbr. 😀 2y
cariashley @Bianca yay! I think they‘re so good. I remember the first one really picking up after the halfway mark actually. 2y

What a conclusion to such a fantastic trilogy...lots of things I didn't see coming, but done so well. Loved all the little things that called back to earlier books, and despite the finality of the ending, really enjoyed it.

This series is so hauntingly beautiful. The ending both irretrievably sad en hopeful.

Bennett really stuck the landing with this one—it was about as perfect an ending to the series as I could have hoped for. As with the other two, the story is propulsive & well-paced, the world richly imagined, but what I love most is how well thought-through the consequences of everything is, both on the characters and the world. There's a heaviness to the protagonist, Sigrud, that resonated with me, but there was an essential hopefulness, too.

I DID NOT SIGN UP TO GET MY HEART RIPPED OUT! DO YOU HEAR ME, MR. BENNETT?! Although I guess I should have expected that, BUT STILL.

*sighs* Still, despite all that, this is the best way Bennett could've closed out this series. I am so glad it ended this way, despite how much it hurts me.

Not to say you SHOULDN'T protest injustice, but remember it's also okay to stop sometimes to take care of yourself before going back into the fray.

Texreader Reminds me of something I learned many years ago: pick your battles. I apply it to both everyday annoyances and the big issues that really matter to me. It really helps with one's mental health. 3y
kammartinez @Texreader Yeah, sometimes people forget how exhausting the work of social justice can be :(. 3y

LAST BOOK IN THE SERIES OMG. And boy, what a series it is! I'm currently in a reading slump at the moment (which isn't helped by the fact that I recently got a PS4 and am now playing Horizon: Zero Dawn), but I do try to get my reading in as much as I can. Will City of Miracles get me to stick around despite the charms of Horizon: Zero Dawn? Knowing the quality of Bennett's writing, that's entirely possible ;D.

So sad this series has ended! Strong female characters, strong world building, and complex and unexpected stories have made all three books in the series a pleasure to read.

I don't get to enjoy the beautiful sunny weather outside because I'm working today as a #saturdaylibrarian. But I'm doing one of my favorite jobs - reading review journals to decide which books I want to order to add to our collection. 📚

CoverToCoverGirl Lucky you getting to make those selections. 🤓 3y
ferskner Me too! I snuck out at lunch for our local restaurant festival. I don't mind a day full of book ordering and amazing food. 3y

This arrived today!! I was so lucky to win an ARC from Goodreads. I read the first book in this trilogy on my honeymoon, so it's tied to lots of warm fuzzy memories in addition to being a great read. The second book did not disappoint, and now a sneak peek at the third! Dropping everything, this series is just too great to delay!

This was such a good book. I was lucky enough to win an advance copy from the publisher. This is a very satisfying conclusion to the Divine Cities trilogy, especially if you're a fan of Sigrud (and who isn't?).

It follows Sigrud across much of the world, including many places we've seen in the first two books, as well as several new locales. It all builds to a stunning conclusion that is bigger than anything in the first books.

I was lucky enough to win a contest recently that included the first two books of this series as well as an advance copy of the latest book, which doesn't come out until May! I'm so excited to have this so early!
