Denial: Holocaust History on Trial
Denial: Holocaust History on Trial | Deborah E Lipstadt
3 posts | 6 read | 12 to read
In her acclaimed 1993 book Denying the Holocaust, Deborah Lipstadt called David Irving, a prolific writer of books on World War II, one of the most dangerous spokespersons for Holocaust denial. The following year, after Lipstadt s book was published in the United Kingdom, Irving filed a libel suit against Lipstadt and her publisher. She prepared her defense with the help of a first-rate team of solicitors, historians, and experts, and a dramatic trial unfolded. Denial, previously published as History on Trial, is Lipstadt s riveting, blow-by-blow account of this singular legal battle, which resulted in a formal denunciation of a Holocaust denier that crippled the movement for years to come. Lipstadt s victory was proclaimed on the front page of major news-papers around the world, such as The Times (UK), which declared that history has had its day in court and scored a crushing victory. I'm currently reading this book. After having someone call me "a murderous lying jew" among a lot of other horrific things and telling me the Holocaust was "jewish propaganda" this book seems appropriate. If you are wondering yes I was very shaken up by the experiance and still am. All I did was try to tell them why we call the Tanakh the Tanakh and explain why shabbat is from Friday evening to Saturday evening. ?(see comments)

Insightsintobooks I'm not that far into it, but the part on the Kotel (western wall) brought tears to my eyes.... well actually just the mention of the Kotel at all tends to do that. 4y
cariashley That‘s awful!! I‘m so sorry you had to deal with that. 4y
BookDragonNotWorm I'm so sorry someone made you feel that way. Some people are just horrible and ignorant. 4y

TheBookAddict 😢 oh no, I‘m sorry you had to experience that. I honestly don‘t understand how people can believe such lies. Just know that not everyone who isn‘t Jewish is that ignorant, insensitive, and disrespectful. We are here for you. I will not pretend to know more than what the public school system taught me, which wasn‘t much, about the holocaust but one thing is for sure; it did happen. Sending you hugs. 💕💕💕 4y
TheBookAddict I think I now need to read more about those events and the Jewish community. I need to be more knowledgeable about it. I usually don‘t read books about the holocaust because of how terrible and sad it is, but I need to be better about just turning a blind eye to things like that. Thank you for sharing and making me aware of a change I need to make in myself. 4y
Eggs That‘s horrible! How ghastly can some humans be. 💔😥😰 4y
Insightsintobooks @TheBookAddict Thank you. I know. Thank you for the hugs. @BookDragonNotWorm I agree some people are, luckily most aren't. 🙂 @cariashley thanks.. @eggs I agree 4y
Texreader How awful! At least it was made abundantly clear that these are people you should stay far far away from. They are not worth anyone‘s time or attention. I‘m so sorry you were put through that. 4y
Insightsintobooks @Texreader that's true and thank you. 4y
Branwen *hugs* I am so sorry this happened to you. How awful. 💕 4y
Insightsintobooks @Branwen thanks the hugs are EXTREMELY appreciated. ❤ 4y
rwmg That is awful. 😥 How can people be so ignorant when we have all the resources of the internet age at our disposal? 4y
arubabookwoman I'm so sorry that happened to you. I have a difficult time comprehending why people can be so hateful. 4y
Insightsintobooks @rwmg I don't know, but I think also because of the internet it makes it easier for people to believe whst they want without really looking into it when it wouod be justas easy as a click or two to prove their horrid beliefs wrong. I think it can go both ways. 4y
Insightsintobooks @arubabookwoman thank you. I have a difficult time comprehending it as well. 4y
BookwormM Sorry people are d***s I personally am not religious but the religion that appeals most to me is Judaism from what I know of it and I am always keen to know more about others beliefs 4y
CarolynM I don't have words to tell you how I feel reading about your experience. I'm sorry you have to put up with ignorant, deluded people who feel they have the right to abuse you. 4y
Insightsintobooks @BookwormM thanks. It's a beautiful religion... (okay I may be a bit biased in that statement. 😃). 4y
