It's sort of a Christmas story, so it felt like an appropriate read for today! I really wasn't sure about William from the opening and he only kind of redeemed himself, but I enjoy Lavinia's open enthusiasm about sex and her attempts to teach William how to love.

This does contain sex scenes that are not wholly skippable because dialogue that shapes how the characters react later is interspersed with it.

Thanks to #IStandWithCourtneyMilan on Twitter, I went through my wishlist and spend my Christmas money from my grandma on a nice selection of diverse romance novels from Milan and those doing the work to support her.

16...ish? new romance novels on my Kindle. I'm a mood reader so who knows when I'll get to them, but my money went where my mouth is today!

I very much enjoyed Courtney Milan's first published novella. She could've handled the consent angle better, as she acknowledges in the notes to this enhanced edition, but the writing's fabulous and the characters have all sorts of interesting things going on within and alongside their romantic relationship. Bonus points because the heroine runs a subscription library, too.

Well, tonight could've been better. I'm still ashamed I messed up my swap application, I spent ages chasing Casey through the snow when he refused to come in, and the cousin who got my reader's pack at the gift exchange was visibly disappointed with it.

On the plus side, I got a new hot water bottle with a soft, fuzzy cover, and I'm poised to wallow in a Courtney Milan Christmas novella.

Nebklvr Wallow away! I am too 5y
Nebklvr Who wouldn‘t love a readers pack? Jerk 5y
xicanti @Nebklvr I thought a book + reading snacks was a fun idea. 😔 Maybe she just wasn't into that particular book and those particular snacks. 5y

Nebklvr @xicanti I think there was a mix up at the nursery. You really belong in my family. 5y
RaimeyGallant That's too bad. 5y
Bklover I think this is why we love gift exchanges with Littens. We understand each other. A reader‘s pack sounds wonderful! 5y
Cinfhen I agree ☝🏾 who wouldn‘t want a reader‘s pack?!?!? 5y
Kaye One of the reasons I think this holiday is difficult. Trying to get just the right gift for someone then you can tell they either didn‘t like it, or expected more . They could‘ve at least pretended to like it. 5y
Amiable One time at my family's Yankee swap I brought a box of assorted used books, a gift card to Barnes & Noble for new books, a mug, chocolates, and a basket with teas and hot cocoa. One of my brothers got it, and immediately traded it away because--in his words--he "hasn't read a book since high school." (He's 46. ? Not sure why anyone would brag about that.) (edited) 5y
xicanti @kaye it was for one of those gift exchanges where nobody knows who'll end up with each present in the end, but I did make sure all the snacks were gluten-free in case this cousin or her sister got my thing. I thought they were readers in that part of the family, too, and that this book would fit most of their interests. Sigh. 5y
xicanti @Amiable eep. I once had a coworker who told me he'd read maybe six books in his life, and I had no idea what to say to him. I went off and told another coworker, who was equally horrified. 5y
Kaye Well, try not to worry about it. You did your best. Maybe next year a gift card would be easiest. Most people can use them for something they like. 5y
