Mohawk
Mohawk | Richard Russo
6 posts | 4 read | 2 to read
Mohawk, New York, is one of those small towns that lie almost entirely on the wrong side of the tracks. Its citizens, too, have fallen on hard times. Dallas Younger, a star athlete in high school, now drifts from tavern to poker game, losing money, and, inevitably, another set of false teeth. His ex-wife, Anne, is stuck in a losing battle with her mother over the care of her sick father. And their son, Randall, is deliberately neglecting his school work--because in a place like Mohawk it doesn't pay to be too smart. In Mohawk, Pulitzer Prize-winning author, Richard Russo, explores these lives with profound compassion and flint-hard wit. Out of derailed ambitions and old loves, secret hatreds and communal myths, he has created a richly plotted, densely populated, and wonderfully written novel that captures every nuance of America's backyard.

Mohawk is not the picturesque #smalltown you buy a postcard of as you pass through. It is a perpetually down on its luck place where it's residents do what they can to carve out a life. #rockinmay

Reviewsbylola This sounds promising. 7y
Cinfhen I think that sounds sad @Reviewsbylola but Russo is meant to be a phenomenal writer 7y
Cinfhen And it actually does sound like a good read!!! 7y

Mehso-so

This book didn't quite work for me. It jumped around a lot, and certain details were kept from the reader to create plot surprises in a way that felt clumsy. BUT! A lot of the seeds for his later books - which are excellent - are present here. As a writer it's great to read someone's early stuff knowing they get better. To go from this to Empire Falls is extraordinary; that it's even possible means there's hope for the rest of us.

saresmoore Great review! I think I should read more not-so-great debuts from good authors. I've read so many phenomenal books this year, my confidence in my potential to ever write something worth publishing is totally shot. Ha! 7y
Ericmanciniwriter @saresmoore yes! This was a blog idea I once had where famous writers would share examples of their bad writing to help newer writers. Because everyone has bad writing in their drawer, and once you know that it's a lot easier to do your own writing without beating yourself up 7y
saresmoore That's a brilliant blog idea! 7y
Ericmanciniwriter @saresmoore I give it to you for free (you've got loads of free time for more projects, right?) 7y
saresmoore Oh yes, loads. And I know tons of acclaimed authors, too. 7y

Ericmanciniwriter @ptkpepe98 yikes - that sounds like a thankless job! 7y
ptkpepe98 @Eamann... actually, it was a great first job because I met all kinds of people. The really interesting ones seem to come out at night. 🌒🌘😁 7y

#LitsyPartyOfOne since I had plans last night I'm showing up late for this party - does anyone know if the keg is kicked? Anyways, I'm chucking my TBR to be a completist and read everything by Russo and Haruf, starting with this early Russo.

tpixie Welcome to the party! 7y
kspenmoll I just discovered Haruf, read & loved 7y
Ericmanciniwriter @kspenmoll nice! His trilogy of Plainsong - Eventide - Benediction is so so good. Highly recommend them 7y

Everything is shut down here in Rhode Island, so it's time for books, books, BOOKS. Also if anyone from warmer climates could post up some warm looking photos if would be much appreciated. @saresmoore @KVanRead ?

MyNamesParadise I'd rather be in that climate, snowed in! 7y
readinginthedark A couple of days ago it was in the 60s here but now it's snowy. 😂That's Missouri for you! 7y
mauveandrosysky Did you get THUNDERSNOW, too? We got thundersnow and it was pretty cool. 7y

Ericmanciniwriter @readinginthedark that happened to us too but it's really rare. I had shorts on yesterday! 7y
Ericmanciniwriter @mauveandrosysky also THUNDERSNOW= great band name. Like an AC/DC cover band from Canada 7y
mauveandrosysky I would listen to that band, and I don't even like AC/DC 7y
readinginthedark @Eamann Every year here. It's wacky like that. 7y
KVanRead I've been shut in with a stupid cold/flu but promise pics tomorrow. We've actually been inundated with much needed rain here —I know, rain, cry me a river right 😂 but when it's the only weather you get, it turns out you can make a really big deal out of it! 😂😂😂 7y
Ericmanciniwriter @KVanRead rain??? The horror!! 😱 7y
