The Supernaturalist
The Supernaturalist | Eoin Colfer
9 posts | 32 read | 3 to read
In the future, in a place called Satelite City, fourteen-year-old Cosmo Hill enters the world, unwanted by his parents. He's sent to the Clarissa Frayne Institute for Parentally Challenged Boys, Freight class. At Clarissa Frayne, the boys are put to work by the state, testing highly dangerous products. At the end of most days, they are covered with burns, bruises, and sores. Cosmo realizes that if he doesn't escape, he will die at this so-called orphanage. When the moment finally comes, Cosmo seizes his chance and breaks out with the help of the Supernaturalists, a motley crew of kids who all have the same special ability as Cosmo-they can see supernatural Parasites, creatures that feed on the life force of humans.

Granted my last full read was 7 years ago, this is one of my favorite sci-fi middle grade books. Characters have a great dynamic and I like the world.

RaimeyGallant Nice review. And welcome to Litsy! #LitsyWelcomeWagon Some of us put together Litsy tips to help new Littens navigate the site. It's the link in my bio on my page in case you need it. Meh. A quick read, but it didn‘t really grab me.

Eoin Colfer is the master of young adult science fiction and fantasy. This is one is different from Artemis Fowl but still the plot was amazing and equally engrossing. The characters are loveable. It was short but still left a lot to the imagination. I love it.

This is my grandlizard Cheeto, who is a leopard gecko. She belongs to my oldest kid - they often read together. Cheeto is sort of a mascot for my Little Free Library and sometimes recommends books for my LFL patrons. #funfridayphoto @Liberty

Gezemice Awesome gecko! 8y
Libby1 Have you read Colfer's Artemis Fowl books? Such a funny and clever series. Lovin' the gecko, too. 8y

Eh. My younger students will probably like this, but for me it was just too underdeveloped.

While the middle left me seriously considering its merits, the end reminded me of the qualities I enjoyed in it when I first read it as a kid. It does work pretty well as an "in between book:" appropriate (thematically and reading level) for a wider range of young readers yet still feels YA.

I've been making myself wait to read the graphic novel until after I've finished rereading The Supernaturalist. Honestly, nostalgia is great but this book is not. Thoughts to come.

While far from a flawless book, this childhood read has always stuck with me because of its perspective-twisting end. How will the re-read as an adult go?

(And its metallic cover is working this bright sunlight. Hello, I guess it's spring now?)
