I decided that my first Litsy post should be my favorite book, so here goes. William Gay‘s “The Paperhanger” is the reason I decided to pursue literature wholeheartedly. This short story collection is Southern gothic/grit lit at it‘s best. I will be evangelizing William Gay‘s fiction until I die.

randiadams @whatshesreadingnow Thank you! I don‘t think I‘ll be able to properly put into words how much I love this collection! @Ruthiella Thank you for the warm welcome! I‘m stoked to add lots of new stuff to my list while I‘m here! @asiriusreader Thank you so much! 6y
randiadams @Kaye Boy do I have you on that front! I just completed a list for my comprehensive exams and my theme is social class in the upper south (lots of Appalachian works)! I can certainly pass that along! @CoffeeNBooks Thank you for the warm welcome!! 6y

Kaye @randiadams I‘d certainly love to see your list. I read a lot more NF nowadays, but my favorite fiction and memoirs are almost always Southern . They know how to tell a story better than anyone else. 6y
Kaye I see you have One Foot in Eden on your book list. My favorite so far by Ron Rash. Beautifully told story. Not sure why it doesn‘t get the attention his others have. 6y
randiadams @Kaye One Foot In Eden is my favorite as well. I went to undergrad right around the area the book is based in and have done lots of exploring there with my friend who grew up near the lake that floods the valley. Ron Rash is fantastic (he‘s a professor at the university I attend)! Have you read any of his poetry? I‘m trying to play catch up and add lots of stuff I‘ve read and want to read to my lists. You‘re SO right about Southern writers 6y
Kaye No, sadly I‘ve never been a poetry fan. I wouldn‘t have anything in that area to mention. I‘ll give you some time to get settled in. Takes a long time to get your books added in here. I only had partial lists to go by. The rest was memory. I wish I would‘ve kept closer track of my reading but I‘m not much for restricted reading of any sort. I just read whatever strikes my fancy at the moment. I‘ve tried to do better in here though. Holler later ✨ (edited) 6y

This is a collection of 13 short stories. I haven't read anything bad by William Gay. This is no exception. I would recommend everything he's written. The title is from a Jimmie Rodgers song called "Blue Yodel No. 3 (Evening Sun Yodel)" If youve never heard Rodgers, I recommend giving him a listen because his songs complement the book nicely. The stories are filled with heartbreak and violence. Some are very dark. Gay's prose leads you through it.
