Man Who Made Lists: Love, Death, Madness, and the Creation of Roget's Thesaurus
Man Who Made Lists: Love, Death, Madness, and the Creation of Roget's Thesaurus | Joshua Kendall
2 posts | 2 read | 21 to read
In the tradition of The Professor and the Madman, a "brisk and vivid"( Los Angeles Times) account of an obsessive scholar. Polymath, eccentric, and synonym aficionado, Peter Mark Roget had a host of female admirers, was one of the first to test the effects of laughing gas, invented the slide rule, and narrowly escaped jail in Napoleon's France. But Roget is best known for making lists. After the tragic turmoil of his early life (both his mother and sister were institutionalized), Roget longed for order in his chaotic world. At the age of eight, he began his quest to put everything in its rightful place, one word at a time. This is the fascinating story of a driven man and a brilliant scholar-and the legacy he has left for generations.

Another find as I weed the library‘s shelves! I think we book lovers can appreciate a history of the thesaurus. I‘m giving this a forever home...

#TBRtemptation post 2! The extraordinary life of Peter Mark Roget is the focus of this incredible bio. He was a complicated polymath who endeared himself to the ladies. His family came to rely on him & he narrowly avoided Napoleon's jails. He was the test subject for laughing gas, & he invented the slide rule. And, of course, his list-centric persona created his Thesaurus, an attempt at ordering the chaotic world. #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎

drokka I have this (different cover though) and it starts out pretty well. I didn't realize the originally the thesaurus used to be set up thematically rather than alphabetically, like it is now. 7y
