Hamlet, Prince of Denmark
Hamlet, Prince of Denmark: A Novel | A.J. Hartley, David Hewson
8 posts | 11 read | 3 to read
An electrifying modern language reimagining of Shakespeares classic tale of vengeance - the much-requested text of the international bestselling audiobook voiced by Richard Armitage. It is a tale of ghosts, of madness, of revenge - of old alliances giving way to new intrigues. Denmark is changing, shaking off its medieval past. War with Norway is on the horizon. And Hamlet - son of the old king, nephew of the new - becomes increasingly entangled in a web of deception - and murder. Struggling to find his place in this strange new order Hamlet tries to rekindle his relationship with Ophelia - the daughter of Elsinores cunning spy master, a man with plots of his own. Hamlet turns for advice and support to the one person he can trust -- Young Yorick, the slippery, unruly jester, whose father helped Hamlet through a difficult childhood. And all the while the armed forces of Fortinbras, prince of Norway, start to assemble, threatening to bring down Elsinore forever.

Let me say that Richard Armitage needs to lend his voice to more audiobook readings.
Interesting character adaptation of these characters.
one down from my #MtTBR pile

I saw that @Chelleo had commented about knowing more on our #litsyavatar and mine is an artist interpretation of Belle if she was a club raver and I just loved it.

Belle has been my fave Disney princess since her inception; I see a lot of me in her so why not?
The whole image has her wearing these chunky yellow fur boots and yellow short suspenders.

Chelleo Love Fan art/interpretations!! 6y

This was excellent, and much prefered to the "real" Hamlet. Though staying true to Shakespeare, Hartley just adds more detail and I find I care more about the characters here. Will definitely use this next time I teach Hamlet in Eng.lit.

Made a dress while future husband Richard Armitage read this Hamlety novel. I enjoy Hartley's take on the story immensely- is one allowed to say that one prefers this over the original?😳🙈😉

TrishB Love the dress ❤️ 6y
HannaPolkadots Thanks @TrishB ! 😍 6y
MayJasper So you prefer this version to Shakespeare's. Why the heck not? Tudor English is often impenetrable in my opinion. 6y

3 🌟 I wanted to love this, but even Richard Armitage's brilliant narration couldn't make the writing more than just okay for me.

Imlostinbooks I'm struggling through the book right now. I love it and get frustrated in equal measure. 8y
CarrieKitz @Imlostinbooks That was my experience, too. 8y

I really thought I could listen to anything at all if it was read by Richard Armitage, but I'm having a hard time getting into this one. Anyone read it? Should I keep going?

Dogearedcopy Well, since you presumably know how it ends, if you're not enjoying the narration, I would recommend DNF-ing it! 8y
CarrieKitz I am enjoying the narration, but Hamlet is such a whiner! Lol 8y
