Day the Universe Changed
Day the Universe Changed | James Burke
5 posts | 3 read | 4 to read
In The Day the Universe Changed, James Burke examines eight periods in history when our view of the world shifted dramatically: in the eleventh century, when extraordinary discoveries were made by Spanish crusaders; in fourteenth-century Florence, where perspective in painting emerged; in the fifteenth century, when the advent of the printing press shook the foundations of an oral society; in the sixteenth century, when gunnery developments triggered the birth of modern science; in the early eighteenth century, when hot English summers brought on the Industrial Revolution; in the battlefield surgery stations of the French revolutionary armies, where people first became statistics; in the nineteenth century, when the discovery of dinosaur fossils led to the theory of evolution; and in the 1820s, when electrical experiments heralded the end of scientific certainty. Based on the popular television documentary series, The Day the Universe Changed is a bestselling history that challenges the reader to decide whether there is absolute knowledge to discover - or whether the universe is "ultimately what we say it is".

While holiday shopping on Amazon, I found the perfect surprise birthday gift for my husband: companion books to his favourite science/history documentary TV series, James Burke's Connections & The Day The Universe Changed. They finally arrived yesterday and he was definitely surprised! He was so blown away he hugged me and even cried! It was awesome ☺️ #BooksfortheWin #BookGifts

Bookwomble I loved James Burke's shows when I was a kid. Connections was one of my favourites 🙂 What a fantastic find, and really cool book covers. 5y
TK-421 @Bookwomble Thanks! I wish I had known about these shows as a kid! 5y

1️⃣ Ursula K. Le Guin, Leonard Nemoy, Mary Shelly, Rokeya Sakhawat Hossain and Umberto Eco, but probably not in the same room.
2️⃣ Tagged. James Burke, but with the important caveat that it's the book and tv series and not him that was of influence.

1️⃣ Tagged. I went into history because of it.
2️⃣ I missed meeting Leonard Nimoy and Ursula Le Guin. I would have liked to meet Jean Cocteau.
3️⃣ At this point, I not really sure. Writing typos? People writting my name wrong, even after knoing me for 16 years. Something like that.
4️⃣ @SamanthaMarie Hi!

Jess7 Thanks for the shoutout and for participating! 🤗🤗 I've never used Kobo - it pretty similar to a kindle? 7y
Liberty 😊 7y
tournevis @Jess7 It's essentially the same, but another company. It has the advantage of using epub format and can read open and DRM docs, which you can buy anywhere and sideload. This is especially important if you don't live in the US or read in a language other than English. If you're in the US, kindle is better (but a closed system). 7y
