Lurking Fear: & Other Stories
Lurking Fear: & Other Stories | H P Lovecraft
6 posts | 3 read | 2 to read
"‘The thing came abruptly and unannounced; a demon, rat-like, scurrying from pits remote and unimaginable, a hellish panting and stifled grunting, and then from that opening beneath the chimney a burst of multitudinous and leprous life - a loathsome night-spawned flood of organic corruption more devastatingly hideous than the blackest conjurations of mortal madness and morbidity.’ " Only the expansive imagination of H.P. Lovecraft could conceive the delicious and spine-tingling horrors you will find within the pages of this unique collection. In addition to such classics as The Picture in the House, The Music of Erich Zann and The Rats in the Walls, this volume contains some fascinating rarities: examples of Lovecraft's earliest weird fiction and material unpublished during his lifetime. H.P. Lovecraft's creation of the Cthulhu Mythos has influenced many modern authors, and still remains at the forefront of supernatural literature.

For this being my first foray into Lovecraft, I sure have a lot of Cthulhu merch! Not pictured: The Cthulhu shirt I wore tonight. Okay: this collection is too crowded. Reading 31 stories in a month was fatiguing to most of our bookclub. Still a Pick, though: I think that the great stories in here were some of the best horror I‘ve read. He‘s a master of atmosphere, of ominous dread, and the language was often beautiful, a pleasure to read aloud.

Happy Halloween! If you‘re looking for a scary story to send you into nightmares tonight, I‘d recommend listening to the 1964 radio adaptation of “The Rats in the Walls.” All the horror without the abhorrent, racist cat name: https://www.relicradio.com/otr/2019/08/the-rats-in-the-walls-by-the-black-mass/

Bookwomble I was glad they edited that out. The awful slur aside, I think this is one of HPL's best stories. 💀🐀 3y

Read three stories on our drive home today, one of them was “From Beyond.” The 1986 movie is on Shudder so of course we watched that when we got home. Oh boy. Oh boy oh boy oh boy. Lovecraft both produced and inspired such bizarre nightmare fuel.

TheNeverendingTBR Such a great movie!!! 👌 4y
TheNeverendingTBR Re-Animator also 💯 4y

We couldn‘t hold back any longer and just HAD to go browse at a real life bookstore! Online shopping is fine if you know what you want (Tagged was the only one on my list, and On the Beach was one of my favorite reads from 2019) but sometimes you can‘t know that you want to get a book called Catmagic! Not pictured: Flowers in the Attic. A CLASSIC I haven‘t read yet and oh my goodness. We started it yesterday and it is more than we could‘ve hoped.

TheNeverendingTBR I've never seen that 'On The Beach' cover, love it!! Can I ask, who's the Publisher of that? 4y
Michael_Gee @TheNeverendingTBR isn‘t it a delight? It is the 1979 Ballantine edition 4y
TheNeverendingTBR @GhostStories So good, Ballantine books is one of my favourite publishers, alongside TOR and Signet! 🖤 4y
