The Emperor of Paris
The Emperor of Paris | CS Richardson
5 posts | 4 read | 7 to read
Like his father before him, Octavio runs the Notre-Dame bakery, and knows the secret recipe for the perfect Parisian baguette. But, also like his father, Octavio has never mastered the art of reading and his only knowledge of the world beyond the bakery door comes from his own imagination. Just a few streets away, Isabeau works out of sight in the basement of the Louvre, trying to forget her disfigured beauty by losing herself in the paintings she restores and the stories she reads. The two might never have met, but for a curious chain of coincidences involving a mysterious traveller, an impoverished painter, a jaded bookseller, and a book of fairytales, lost and found . . .

ErikasMindfulShelf @TheKidUpstairs Is The Diviners part of a series? 6y
TheKidUpstairs @irre it is part of the Manawaka Cycle. It's a series of books that connect to the fictional town of Manawaka. It is technically the "last", but you don't need to read the others first. They are only loosely connected stories, not a narrative series. I read The Diviners in high school, without having read any of the others, and loved it. 6y
ErikasMindfulShelf Great @TheKidUpstairs Can‘t wait to read it. Did you read any of the others? 6y

These are the first two to come to mind for #bittersweetsymphony Both beautiful stories, containing the highs and lows of love and life.

@Cinfhen

TheKidUpstairs Tagging the book on the left :) 7y
Cinfhen Today's prompt is introducing me to sooo many wonderful new books...except they're all bittersweet reads 😬💕 7y
TheKidUpstairs @Cinfhen I highly recommend both of these. Yes, they are bittersweet, but they are so beautifully written. And neither is very long, so they are good for savouring. 7y

Lindy Also, hooray for Parisian settings by #CanadianAuthors 🇨🇦 (edited) 7y
TheKidUpstairs @Lindy I'll second that! Something about Paris rapt lends itself to the bittersweet, doesn't it? 7y
Lindy @TheKidUpstairs I'm a sucker for novels set in Paris and I prefer bittersweet over sweet any day. 😀 7y
TheKidUpstairs @Lindy yes. Bittersweet is so much more interesting and engaging. 7y

A charming story set in my favourite city. #wishiwasthere #booktober

Hobbinol That's outside the Pompidou Centre, isn't it? Niki de Saint Phalle sculptures are so vibrant and distinctive. Great photo! 8y
Lindy @Hobbinol Yes, it's the Stravinsky fountain. I've taken many photos of it, but they aren't on this device, so I nabbed one from the Internet. 8y
