After an earthquake creates a crack in a lake bed, causing it to drain, a skeleton becomes exposed on the former lake bed. It has a Soviet listening device attached to it, confirming murder. We actually know whodunnit from the start, but the book slowly unravels the why. The murderer‘s storyline took some time to grow on me, but ultimately I was very satisfied by this book.

Another enjoyable outing for detective erlendur which leads the reader into an investigation of a dead body found when a lake begins to lose water and takes us back to 1950's east Germany for the origins of the crime. Erlendur is struggling with personal problems as his wayward daughter sinks further into addiction and he cannot escape from his obsession with missing persons. I love grumpy police officers so thoroughly enjoy thus series.

I had high hopes for this Nordic noir. Police detective Erlandur is assigned to the case when skeletal remains and a Cold War radio transmitter are found in lake that is drying out. The style is dry and matter of fact, even with all of the personal problems Erlandur is carrying about his family, and love life. He did grow on me a bit, but this whole book is just too dour.
