The Sleep of the Righteous
The Sleep of the Righteous | Wolfgang Hilbig
4 posts | 7 read | 5 to read
Doppelgngers, a murderers guilt, pulp noir, fanatical police, and impossible romances--these are the pieces from which German master Wolfgang Hilbig builds a divided nation battling its demons. Delving deep into the psyches of both East and West Germany,The Sleep of the Righteous reveals a powerful, apocalyptic account of the century-defining nations trajectory from 1945 to 1989. From a youth in a war-scarred industrial town to wearying labor as a factory stoker, surreal confrontations with the Stasi, and, finally, a conflicted escape to the West, Hilbig creates a cipher that is at once himself and so many of his fellow Germans. Evoking the eerie bleakness of films like TarkovskysStalker andThe Lives of Others, this titan of German letters combines the Romanticism of Poe with the absurdity of Kafka to create a visionary, somber statement on the ravages of history and the promises of the future.

One of my goals this year is to read more books in translation so I started 2017 with a book originally published in German. This was such an interesting read, the author was born and lived most of his life in East Germany and you can just feel the bleakness of this in his writing. I would love to read some of his other books but I'm not sure how many have been translated ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 1/2

silentrequiem Do you want recommendations? 7y
CAGirlReading @silentrequiem I would love recommendations! 7y
silentrequiem @CAGirlReading I've been trying to read more translated stuff myself. I loved To the Sky Kingdom by Tang Qi, a fantasy based on Chinese mythology of the Heavenly Kingdom and immortals. Also Out of Sorts by Aurelius Valognes, a charming book about an old curmudgeon who learns how to live again. 7y

silentrequiem @CAGirlReading Let the Right One In by John Ajvide Lindquist, a Swedish book about vampires and monsters, and how they aren't necessarily the same. The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafon, hist fiction about books. Three Bags Full by Leone Swann, a mystery told by sheep. 7y
LiteraryinLawrence My favorite translator is Alison Anderson who did Muriel Barbery's books. If you haven't read The Elegance of the Hedgehog I totally recommend it! 7y

TBR Tuesday! Highlighting my Two Lines press TBR reads. Two Lines is a fabulous small press which specializes in works in translation. I currently have three of their books on my TBR as well as their bi-annual journal that I can't wait to read!
